Description: After disco broke, Brown's albums mostly ranged from inconsistent to awful, but this set distills his declining years into two totally solid discs. He struggles fascinatingly with new slang and the new rhythms people were dancing to, even while almost accidentally inventing some of his own; he cops a riff from Bowie's "Fame," remakes his old tunes, takes a few stabs at ultraslick disco, and finally throws his hands up and settles in for extended funk vamps, driven by playfulness rather than urgency (the 11-minute "For Goodness' Sakes, Look at Those Cakes" is about what you think it's about). Guitarist Jimmy Nolen is the secret force behind these small delights, underscoring everything with pungent, slightly atonal funk riffs. --Douglas Wolk

Reviews:

If You're looking for a Sex Machine Today CD...

This will be one of 3 CD's that will complete a collection of songs from the 1975 release of "Sex Machine Today." Doggone if this one is out of print today, I at least have 2 of the 3 so far. I've never heard this CD, but I know some of the tracks and it will be good for my collection (plus, I have to rate the CD to give this review.) If You would like to know (if You don't already) the other collections and if You get a hold of this one, pick up "the official" part one of this compilation "Make It Funky/ The Big Payback: 1971-1975," and "James Brown Greatest Hits," featuring the tracks, "Get Up Off Of Me," and "Deep In It." No CD has ever been printed for the "Sex Machine Today," LP, but the tracks are already available anyway! The record label's gotta make that money, Ya know?!

Is it worth it?

a interestign collection of james browns music. some uptempo really funky stuff mixed with james rapping!! worth buying if your building up a collection of his work but if you want to hear the best and most popular stuff, this is not the one to buy. a couple of reworked tracks on offer though which gives a different flavor to some songs

What were they thinking?

How could you not put "Superbad Superslick" on this comp? I bought it for "Spank" and "Body Heat" and nothing else! No wonder it's no longer available! True fans of JB know he'd seen better days, but it seems as though they picked the worse stuff they could find! You'd be hard pressed to find two CD's of material during this period, but some record company geniuses scooped up anything (but the right stuff) and slapped it on TWO discs, no less!!!
