Description: Part one of Guns N' Roses' ambitious second album is arguably the better of the two. It certainly rocks harder, though this seems to be more coincidence than anything else; which songs went on which CD looks to have been a random selection. Use Your Illusion I stays closer to the band's bluesy hard-rock roots, with guitarist Izzy Stradlin contributing some of the best songs, including "Dust N' Bones" and "You Ain't the First." "November Rain" (clocking in at over nine minutes) became an instant classic, and there are a fair number of straight-ahead rockers, such as "Perfect Crime," "Don't Damn Me," and "Garden of Eden." Taking the best from this album and Use Your Illusion II would have made a killer single CD, but there's enough good stuff here to make it worthwhile. --Genevieve Williams

Reviews:

November Rain

This is the best cd for Live and Let Die & November Rain. The
reason I got this cd is because November Rain had some of the best riffs I have ever heard in my life. That's what's known as
best song ever! Buy UYI2 if you are very interested in this album. Great CD

The Best GnR album of all

Better than Appetite or Illusion II. Basically, more daring than Appetite, and more solid than Illusion II. "Right Next Door to Hell," "Perfect Crime," and "Garden of Eden," are true to GnR form. "Dust n Bones," "Bad Obsession," and "You ain't the First" show different sides of GnR. "Double-talkin' Jive," written by Izzy Stradlin, is brilliant. "November Rain" and "The Garden" (w/ Alice Cooper) are the classics. "Bad Apples" is a bit of a 70's throwback, a bit like Mott the Hoople or the Faces. The Illusion albums are musings of a band on an emotional rollercoaster, to say the least. The same turmoil and tension that ripped this great band apart in a matter of a few years also happened to spawn many amazing songs which separated Guns n Roses from any band or musical category of its time.

UYI 1 & 2: So Much Potential

This review is for both Use Your Illusion I & II albums. Appetite For Destruction was both a breakthrough and monumental album. However, the Illusion albums had the potential to be even better albums than Appetite. The Illusion albums provided some of the greatest G N' R music featuring classics like Don't Cry, November Rain, Civil War, Estranged, and You Could Be Mine. The albums highlighted Slash's unbelievable and underappreciated talent but yet seemed marred by the inconsistency of Axl's songwriting. This is something I don't understand about the Illusion albums. They feature some of the most brilliant songs such as November Rain, Civil War, and Estranged. At the same time they feature way too many incomplete or just plain poor arrangements like Bad Obsession, You Ain't the First, Back off Bitch, Breakdown, and Get In the Ring. I am disappointed because these albums had a lot of potential that wasn't quite realized. Though I would definitely say that the handful of classics from the Illusion albums are among some of the best in rock music.
