Description: Take one part Ramones, one part Buzzcocks, and one part Husker Du, and you've got the basic foundation of Green Day, a punky, witty, melodic San Francisco Bay area trio who became overnight stars in 1994 when this album, their third overall release and major label debut, catapulted them to the top of the pop charts. Led by guitarist/vocalist Billie Joe Armstrong and their secret weapon, powerhouse drummer Tre Cool, Green Day put '70s and '80s punk in a compact '90s package with songs like "Longview," "Basket Case," "Pulling Teeth," and the hit semi-ballad, "When I Come Around." One the few modern alternative rock bands with a bona fide sense of humor.

Reviews:
Great Green Day album, a classic
I'm tired of how everyone is always puttin down Green Day. Just because they signed with a major label doesn't mean they sold out. Sure, they might not be that original, but I think they're pretty talented musicians nonetheless. Just because you don't like a certain type of music, doesn't mean you have the right to say it sucks. Different people like different music, not everyone's alike. I'm also sick of how people are always writing reviews without getting their facts straight first or basing them on other people's reviews without checking it out firsthand. How many times do I have to say this, the lead singer is not trying to imitate an English accent, that's just the way he sings. He's always sang that way, ever since he was a kid. If you don't like how he sounds then that's your problem, but don't go around giving people the wrong ideas about a band you're not even that sure about. Also there are many different types of Punk, it's not just based on one specific style. In fact, I thought the whole idea of Punk was to be an indivisual and not care about what anyone else thinks of you. This is Green Day's main attitude towards life on and off the stage so even if alot of their songs aren't exactly traditional punk, they're still punks themselves. Heck, they even wrote a song for their new album in memory of Johnny Ramone (It's called 'Wake Me Up When September Ends')and just so you know, I happen to be a very big Punk Rock fan and I think it has already been killed by bands like Good Charlotte and Simple Plan. Wow, that was the longest review I ever wrote. Come to think of it, it wasn't a review at all. Anyway, I have all the Green Day CDs and I think that 'Dookie' and 'American Idiot' are the two best ones they've ever made. Oh by the way, 'American Idiot' is the most original CD they've ever made(I'd advise you to get that one too).
i heart green day!
this cd is so good! although it's sort of old (i like newer music) it's still one of my favorite cds! and its so funny! the best songs are "Welcome To Paradise" (a remake), "Basketcase" (a stoner song~ its funny) and "Chump" (a song for everyone who's felt like a loser). Everyone of these songs shows off Billie Joe Armstrong's super sexy voice and the great lyrics and instruments. I would definately recommend it!
I know I'll get a 3 out 507 helpful vote, but
This is what started the downfall of American rock music. This album, with ALL INTENTS AND PURPOSES, destroyed rock by inventing the worst genre of all time...emo. The music is TOO simple. The guitarist plays the same chords over and over, and ALMOST ALL OF THEM are in E major. I blame this band and Korn for the downfall of rock in the USA.
Besides some decent songwriting and two good songs (When I come Around and Welcome to Paradise) this band is really hopeless. And the only person SOMEWHAT talented in the band is the drummer (I dont know his name).
Its really quite a shame too. '94 was one s**ty year for rock...Kurt Cobains suicide (the event that forcasted rocks demise), Metallica starting to write alternative (this wouldn't be seen until '96, however), U2 selling out, and finally this garbage came.
Since then crap like Good Charlotte have been making millions, I can never forgive Green Day...
