Description: For its first new set of music since 2000's
Warning, Green Day tears up the blueprint and comes up with something unexpected: a punk rock concept album built around elaborate melodies, odd tempo changes, and a collection of songs that freely reference classic rock warhorses like the Beatles and Pink Floyd. "She's a Rebel" and "St. Jimmy" might sound like vintage Green Day, but the rest of the disc finds the Northern California trio trying on a variety of different guises: "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" is a cliché-strewn Foo Fighters-style power ballad; "Extraordinary Girl" floats on Indian strings; and the hushed "Wake Me Up When September Ends" wouldn't sound entirely out of place on a Jessica Simpson record. It doesn't always work. "Dearly Beloved" eerily resembles the Alarm's "68 Guns," while the title track eerily resembles something Green Day has already done far too many times. But, overall,
American Idiot represents a promising step forward.

Reviews:
Ambitiously Bad
This album has so many individual riff rip-offs it shouldn't be considered an original work. To name a few, there is the obvious Johnny Cash "Ring of Fire" solo in "Jesus of Suburbia". There's also a David Bowie "Rock n Roll Suicide" rip in the same song. "Holiday" rips "The Passenger" by Iggy Pop. There are other Ramones, Buzzcocks, and Police rips too.
Do yourself a favor and buy an album from any of the bands that Green Day ripped off. Don't support this kind of crap.
ARE YOU AMERICAN PEOPLE REALLY CRAZY?
ARE YOU PEOPLE REALLY A NATION OF IDIOTS? I don't understand what's wrong with you people. This album topped No 1 in the U.S. and look at the title of the album. AMERICAN IDIOT. OMG! Listen to the lyrics "A nation full of idiots" and you people top these songs to no 1? A majority of the american reviews here are praising this album and giving it a 5 star. Makes me wonder, is it really a nation full of idiots?
Best album of 2004.
Green Day's modest success over the years has failed to find them a real niche in the mainstream market, as their albums only seemed to range from Quite Good (Dookie, Nimrod) to Horrendous (Shenanigans, Warning). However, when all looked lost for the California trio, a little bit of carelessness from their recording crew led to one of the true masterpieces of last year.
The band, which comprise Billy Joe (singer/guitarist), Mike Dirnt (Bass) and Tre Cool (drums) were in full swing and on the verge of completing an album, full of the short, catchy riffs and meaningless but likeable lyrics that their fans had been accustomed to, when they suddenly realised that their entire cache of new tracks had been wiped out. The group failed to find the motivation to re-record the tracks, instead deciding to direct their anger at their 'elected' government. The move payed off, and American Idiot was born.
The title track, which will seem familiar to fans of their older material (but with more aggression and superior guitar work), spent three weeks at numebr one in the UK charts...wait, my mistake. It was one week at number three. Still, that was more than enough to get the ball rolling. The following week, the album was released, and went straight to the top of the chart. This song was overshadowed by their second single, Boulevard Of broken Dreams, a brilliant down-tempo ballad, which spent six weeks in the top ten, and more than four months in total in the charts.
But it's the band's third single, Holiday (ironically, the least successful of the three - it missed out on the top ten by a whisker), that really stands out. The song is astonishingly angst-ridden, with a phenominal melody that is unforgettable. It's a joy to listen to - and it's the best thing that Green Day have ever done.
It doesn't even matter that the two 'epic' tracks (two tracks that consist of five different parts each) are tediously long, because just when you're hoping for it to end, it pulls you back in with a new tempo or a key change. It doesn't even matter that their are several songs that recycle the same lyrics - about three other songs mention the Jesus Of Suburbia, and at least one other song uses the line "Don't Want To Be An American Idiot." Because, when push comes to shove, tracks like St. Jimmy, Give Me Novocaine, and Leterbomb are all as good as the singles.
With that in mind, buy it, listen to it, then listen to it again. And never look back.
dweeby question
I know this is probabl the dweebiest question, but is there an edited version? Im sick of not being allowed to own this album on account of parents who "know whats best". i heard shes a rebel and it makes me think bout some older punk stuff(clash stuff like that). Its gotta be my main modivation to be this album. Shes a rebel that is. I see they have moved from the 3 string thing. This is probably the best punk in the spotlight.

The name of this British antiwar band is "Green Day". This punk rock band had three of their songs (at one time) in the top 20, with "American Idiot" winning them a Grammy. This CD was released in 2004 and is now being sold for 18.98. "Green Day" was well known previously for the song "Time of Your Life" but the new CD has really put them on the map. Their latest CD is much better than the previously one, because "Time of Your Life" was the only hit of that CD.
My first impression, of this CD, was that they have a very antiwar stance, with a touch of comedy, in all the songs. As I listened more to the actual lyrics, the songs seemed to be totally anti-American. This CD has four of my favorite songs including "American Idiot", "Boulevard of Broken Dreams", "Holiday", and "Basket Case". These songs are my favorites because they are very fast pace and always have comedy. There is one song that I really dislike, it is called "Jesus of Suburbia", this song has random music lines and is way too long, running nine minutes.
In some of these songs they have random guitar lines and a few songs make no sense at all. Many songs and groups on the airwaves today are antiwar, but not many of these other songs have comedy in them. Overall this record was given a 7.5 out of 10 by the critics, which I personally think is too low. I would give "American Idiot" a 9.5, Boulevard of Broken Dreams" a 8.5, "Holiday" a 7.5, "Jesus of Suburbia" a 2.5, and "Basket Case" a 7. The people who would enjoy this CD are those who are against the war/ or those that like to think about the meaning behind the lyrics. Fans of "Green Day" will be very happy with this CD and should look for them in the future.
WOW
What an album! Every song on here is amazing. Green Day has made what is very well going to be considered their masterpiece. Anyone that says that Green Day sold out when this came out, is wrong. Green Day didnt sell out...they got better.
A classic. In 10 years, you will still find people listening to this cd. Amazing.
