Once voted the worst rock band in America, to listen to this music 30 years later and it is true, up front, in your face, nowhere to hide, live American Rock and Roll!!
Mel's Live Album
This was THE GRAND FUNK RAILROAD in all their rawest, nastiest, sexual, high energy, Rude, Loud Live Power Trio Glory. This is the Greatest Live Album of all time, there are no overdubs only a few tweaks with the audience noise (time for Capitol to really remaster this one, the audience noise sounds wrong on the CD). This was what GFR was all about, Mel Schacher Playing his BOOMING BASS behind the note. Don Brewer Playing his POUNDING DRUMS ahead of the Note and Mark Farner playing his wild rhythms and screeching leads on GUITAR anywhere; before, after, or in the middle of the note. That magic gave GFR a special sound all to there own, It can't be faked or copied, its something natural to the three musicians. Mark and Don together were just the pack, but when they stole Mel from ? and the Mysterians the magic happened and the Pack became Grand Funk Railroad. This album captured millions of fans for GFR who still reminisce about it to this day. It sounds pretty darn good, its nice and bass heavy, like GFR was, in there power trio days. If you don't have a copy of Live album on CD this is a good one to get, But I would still like to see Capitol remaster it.
The Live Album...a classic!
This was the first album I bought and it was worth spending every penny of my grass-cutting money. The album gets cranked up after some introductions from one of the three concerts this album compiled songs from. All three of these 1970 Florida concert dates spanned just three nights. 'Are You Ready' gets it off to a rockin start and it soars from that point. The two gems which showcase Mark Farner's vocals are 'Mean Mistreater', which Farner intercedes with his searing guitar leads, and 'Heartbreaker'. This clearly establishes GFR as the premier power blues band of the decade and is rivaled only by the then disbanded Cream. 'Inside Looking Out' is a remake of the Animals hit but after listening to this very long version its hardly recognizable. A great cut nonetheless. The rest of the album is so energized its sure to drain you provided you can last from beginning to end. Mark, Don, & Mel prove they're the new kings of power rock with this album and musicianship is second to none. Sadly, after '72, these blues roots were uprooted and thrown away in favor of simple commercial rock.
This old hippy is looking for his youth
A 47 year old sales manager in Blackpool (U.K.) who once visited many of the "British" Pop festivals of the early 70's went looking for that raw sound that made the hair's on the back of his neck stand up and sent goose bumps all over his body, yep thats right I found it, on GRAND FUNK LIVE.
Now it helps me stress out on the way home from my straight existance and takes me back to freedom.
I think you'll know what I mean!!
