Description: The Gorillaz claim to have found their motley crew of cartoon characters sleeping in Leicester Square, but Blur's Damon Albarn (a.k.a. 2-D) and cult cartoonist Jamie Hewlett (Murdoc) aren't fooling anyone. As the ultimate experiment in manufactured image, the Gorillaz are a virtual cartoon-character-based hip-hop band who bring together witty, silly lyrics and talented musicians. Infectious old-school hip-hop rhythms, rhymes, and effects courtesy of Deltron 3030's Kid Koala and Del Tha Funkee Homosapien (Russel) are combined with Albarn's passion for chugging lo-fi and edgy melodies to create a seemingly raw but ultimately slick blend of styles. This is nowhere more evident than on the hit single "Clint Eastwood," which is carried along by the sound of 2-D's slurred voice and a bluesy harmonica melody interrupted by Russel's punching rhymes. But the surprises don't stop there: Ibrahim Ferrer's appearance on "Latin Simone" could have come straight from
Buena Vista Social Club but for the obvious Blur-influenced piano style, while the spooky intro to "M1 A1" wouldn't sound out of place on Michael Jackson's
Thriller. Backed by Jamie Hewlett's death-wish character on bass, Cibo Matto's Miho Hatori (Noodle) on guitar and occasional hyperactive vocals, and produced by Dan "the Automator" Nakamura, it's hardly surprising that
Gorillaz is marked both by a sense of playfulness and a passion for experimentation.

Reviews:
A must have for any old school rap/punk fan.
Gorillaz is a weird band to say the least. They use old rap beats with mixture of drums and guitar and it sounds very good when mixed all together. But lyric wise it may remind you of some punk bands out there but its still original in its own right. The reason i gave this album 4 instead of 5 is a few tracks (Mainly latin samone and left hand suziki method) Confused me as to what their purpose was. The only good thing about left hand suzuki method is at the end after a few minutes of silence theres a bonus remix to Clint Eastwood. Its the same song cept alot faster with new rap verses.
Great CD!!!
I love this CD. I like 15 out of 17 of the traks on the CD. Most CD's I get only hav about 50% of the songs that I like. If you're against swearing though, you shouldn't get this.
But I recomend it!!!
Must have album
Very interesting! There is songs for rappers, rockers, or even both and if you get in to the music there is the G-sides (yes it is the b-side of the gorillaz) and Laika Come Home the dub version of the songs. If you have enough money to buy it? Buy it!
Rock/Alternative Hip-Hop/Brit Pop Band
This band is a virtual band, but it is still awesome. 2-D-Lead Vocals, Keyboards, Murdoc-Bass, Russel-Drums, Noodle-Guitars, Vocals. This c-d is always in my c-d player! Gorillaz is one of my top 5 favorite bands with P.O.D., SUM 41, Relient K, and A Flock Of Seagulls. Here is the list of songs and my ratings for them.
1.Re-Hash. Why is it called re-hash? Good bass, but the song is vaugely familiar. 7/10
2.5/4. Why is it called 5/4? One of the c-d's semi-hits. great guitar, drums, and verses. 10+/10
3.Tommorow Comes Today. Great harmonica another semi-hit. 10/10
4.New Genious. Reminds me of frankenstein, and other people think so too. Why is it called New Genious? 10/10
5.Clint Eastwood. Why is it called Clint Eastwood? The mega hit song. Great rap from Del tha Funkee Homosapien, and good drums, bass, and piano. 10+/10
6. Man Research (Clapper). Why is It called man research clapper?
Silly song were 2-D says "This is a breakfeast club!", and starts ya ya ya. You will get it when you hear it. 3/10
Punk. I don't know if 2-D says the word Punk in this song because no-one knows what he is saying. Great guitar and drums. 10+/10
8.Sound Check (Gravity). Starts out soft, then the awesome turntable kicks in. 10/10
9.Double Bass. Reminds me of double chocolate brownies. bad instrumental song. 2/10
10.Rock Da House. The last semi-hit on the c-d. Good rap from Del, and good drums, but bad horns, flute and piano but I will give it a 10/10
11. 19-2000. The follow-up hit. Why do they call it 19-2000? good dance song. 10/10
12.Latin Simone. Dumb song. 2/10
13.Starshine. Good space song 10/10
14.Slow Country. Why the heck do they call it that? uncool song 4/10

10/10
16.Dracula. crazy song. 6/10
17.Left Hand Suzuki Method. Another crazy song. 3/10
18.19-2000(Soulchild remix). Awesome more upbeat version of 19-2000. 10+/10
Clint Eastwood (ED Case remix) Good upbeat 2-D chorus, but the dumb ragae guy makes the rest of it dumb. 8/10

The future of modern music and what it does to your stomach.
I'm leaning against the wall of the bathroom wondering if I'm gonna throw up.
It's too much.
In order to write this little review I tried to grapple with this album, I tried to swallow it whole. I tried to digest it and I hurt myself. This album is too rich and too multidepthed to allow a simple synopsis. It's too complex to digest quickly. There are too many styles and too many layers. This is a dizzying collection of endless experimentation and surgically brilliant production. And it won't stop.
It's sheik and smooth like the models on the covers of magazines you don't buy but can't help staring at. It's funny too. It's funny in a covert coy way. Like a kid's tv show that secretly pokes fun at adult themes like sex and politics. It's funny enough to make you laugh. But just as your chest swells for a little cute giggle you catch the charred death scent of a cigarette and you can almost taste the burn of cheap whisky in the back of your throat: That's the dark brooding shadows this album casts as you spin it so idly.
And that's why my stomach and mind threaten to rebel (and expel.) How can you devour something with such a range of tastes? You can't eat something salty and sour, spicy and sweat, hot and cold... Maybe a few of these combinations are delectable but the whole array? It'd kill you... you'd choke...
Thank god the album doesn't force its schizophrenic characteristics on you all at once.
Instead the Gorillaz deliver these tastes in subtle sly hints and nudges. And most people would be utterly ignorant of the Band's brilliance if they did not provide the LP with multiple listens. It requires slow and careful consumption. Take your time. Don't try to stuff your face. You'll hardly know what your eating and surely be left uneasy.
Let your mind nibble on the acoustic guitars driving delicately before you tackle the pounding funky bass lines. And only then try to sample the electronic pops and pings. And if you can stomach all that and still keep your composure while adding the synth enhanced atmosphere of the keyboards ONLY THEN try to attack the vocal diversity that this album radiates with.
And if you can manage all that, go ahead and try the next song- cause its nothing like the last.
Underground hip hop savvy moments bob and nod beside blues and rock elements. All of which seem content to share elbow space with electronic and dub theatrics. Pop cues abound in clever debuts threatening cheapen the albums depth- but they are a ploy. They are lures for the unwary, daring you to grow complacent and assume your hearing something you've heard before. BUT these touches are a tease- almost like the masterminds of this album want to remind you that they COULD make hopelessly hip and catchy songs like "Clint Eastwood" all day, but then you'd miss the noir hauntings that inhabit the album's seedy underbelly in tracks like "New Genious (Brother)".
The Gorillaz's S/T first release screams and croons and beeps and blurts. It hums and bumps, drives and thunders. It is inspired and eons ahead of its time. This album either came from the future or is a masterpiece that will help shape the future.
Me? I'm out of the bathroom and adhered to my headphones. Don't be a fool. Take your time, drink plenty of water and enjoy one of the best albums of 2001, one bite at a time.
The most original album in years!
I was honestly surprised at how many people don't like Gorillaz (It's just Gorillaz, not THE Gorillaz, get it right...) They obvoously can't appreciate the utter originality of this WHOLE album. Every song is different and more and more brilliant. Great beats and lyrics. I'm not even a rap or "hip hop" fan. I bought this CD because i heard one song on it and it's the best purchase I could have made. Worth every penny!
