Description: Cuban American singer Gloria Estefan was a mainstream pop balladeer and dance music queen who happened to be Latina before taking a surprising turn in
Mi Tierra and reclaiming her roots. Singing in Spanish, impeccably produced and backed by a superb ensemble that includes 79-year-old maestro Israel Lopez "Cachao" on bass (he is only the creator of mambo itself), arranger Juanito Marquez, and singer and percussionst Luis Enrique, Estefan delivers worthy reinterpretations and updates of traditional Afro-Cuban styles. It might be too smooth for traditionalists--who may also object to Estefan's delivery, not that of classic
sonera--but as an introduction to the music, it is engaging and the playing of the ensemble is true and impeccable.

Reviews:
Hablemos el Mismo Idioma (Let's Speak the Same Language)!
In any language, this Afro-Cuban cd by Gloria Estefan is her effort mas grande. It's also the first Spanish language album I ever bought 11 years ago. Though it took a few plays to realize what a shiny pearl Mi Tierra is, it grew on me and all I have to say is muy excellente, Senor and Senora Estefan!
Not only will this album introduce you to a more polished version of Afro-Cuban music if you are a novice, but it will make you appreciate the culture to which you will be exposed regardless of originals or the covers contained in this cd. True, Gloria is known to be a pop and dance music singer, but her voice is quite pleasant here and carries its weight quite well against an incredibly great ensemble of latin musicians. You will be wisked away to that elusive tropical island pre-Castro from beginning to end and hear songs of Cuban pride, sugar cane, and the longing for home after being driven out. More than anything, the passion of the romantic songs shines through with an irridescent loveliness that would make any bauble jealous if it were possible.
Best tracks: Without a doubt the opener, "Con Los Anos Que me Quedan," which is far better than the English version I've heard, "Mi Tierra," the ultimate Cuban pride song, "Mi Buen Amor," which also has an irresistibly beautiful video to go with it, the heartbreaking "Hablas de Mi," and my absolute favorite, "No Hay Mal Que Por Bien No Venga (Out of All Bad Some Good Things Come)," lush rich, nearly tango-like, and extraordinarily breathtaking.
Mi Tierra is my favorite Gloria Estefan cd, and also among my very favorite latin albums--something endearing often occurs with these first-time purchases. If die-hard cultural music isn't your thing, but you would like to invest in some exploration, Gloria's Mi Tierra will get you started easily enough, and I hope you fall in love with it like I learned to do. It's as romantic and gorgeous as the black and white cover photo of Gloria at the bar promises it to be. Gozar!
I just wanted to add my 5 stars.
I can't say anything more about this CD, it's perfect and everybody should know that by now. Perfect, perfect, perfect!
Don't think twice, just get it!!!
the best of Gloria!
I would say this is her best cd ever!.
Tierra is a beautiful song that highlights cuban roots in a very special way. "Mi buen amor" is simply a beautiful ballad! "Ayer" wow>>another hit!
This cd is entirely worth buying.
