Enduring Icon of German Soft Rock Scene

Gitte Haenning, or just "Gitte", as Germans know her, has been a popular female vocalist in Germany since her big 1963 hit "Ich will 'nen Cowboy als Mann". Her thick Danish accent made the singer even more appealing. -- This CD focuses on Gitte's successes in the 1980s and 90s. Her style has now evolved into the voice for the emancipated middle aged woman, who defies all obstacles and refuses to bow to the male-dominated world that still insists that woman is inferior to man and unable to suvive without his guidance. At times these themes are rather bitter, as in "Liebe, nein danke!" and "Ich will alles". Although there is a cheer for triumph, songs like "Ich bin stark" remind of Gone With The Wind's Scarlet O'Hara raising her fist to the sky and proclaiming herself the victor over oppression. The happy songs of a new day ("Junger Tag", "Wenn du musikalisch bist") Gitte was known for in the 70s have passed; now it's time to sing for the cause of woman, free at last and unwilling to ever again be "enslaved" by relationships with unworthy men. I respect Gitte for what she's doing, although I feel a bit sad that she seems to be so bitter, when show business has been so good to her over nearly 40 years. If she has had troubled relationships with men, then she doesn't need to be mad at the whole world and crank out depressing songs every few months. I feel that Gitte could put her unique voice to better use. Maybe in this new millenium she'll turn around and get happy again!?
