Description: Foxtrot marked a decisive point in Genesis's career. An emerging art-rock band who were building up a growing cult following with a busy touring schedule, this album was an artistic and commercial landmark; it was their first album to chart. Including the classic "Watcher of the Skies" and Peter Gabriel's whimsically compassionate slice of life, "Get 'Em Out by Friday," the album's highlight is the ambitious sidelong epic "Supper's Ready." Comprising seven linked subsections, it was inspired apparently by a frightening experience where Gabriel's wife, Jill, felt she was possessed, and is a story of two lovers and the struggle between good and evil. Certainly it was the most innovative and entertaining piece the band had produced to date. The relatively rough production values could be seen as either detracting somewhat from the impact of the album or adding a pleasantly rough edge to what might otherwise be a somewhat prim sound. --James Swift

Reviews:

Brilliant prog

Foxtrot is probably the bands peak.

Gabriel is magnificent from beginning to end while Collins and co. built the best prog soundtrack.

From opener "Watcher of the Skies" till the last notes of 22 minutes long "Supper's Ready" tha band delivers a brilliant collaboration of poetry and jazz-rock.

If you're into 70's rock music go and buy this album today!

Simply the best album from progressive rock's best band.

This is a definitive album of early 70s progressive rock. It has everything that a progressive rock album should have. A bit over the top, a great start, and that long song to fill an entire side. The album starts off with the unforgettable Watcher of the Skies. This song is sweeping and majestic while still staying concise enough for you to remember every part. Time Table, while not nessicarily a great, is still good enough and a good transition between the heavy hitters. Get Em' Out By Friday is a fast paced song which doesn't get tedious even after many listens.

I like to consider the next three songs the second half of the album, although only two of the three songs on my "second half" are really on the other side. Can Ultility is just an amazing song, its main beat of guitar and synths are great as Collins accents every main beat with a nice crash of the cymbal. Horizons is a short guitar only song leading up to the epic "Supper's Ready". This is a song you have to hear for yourself, clocking in at twenty-three minutes long its a monster of a song. Its hard to describe Supper's Ready, but once you get it... You got it.

Like Genesis? Like Progressive Rock? Get this album.

They started hitting their stride about now

This album is more 'cohesive' than the previous 'Nursery Cryme' effort. I think it is also a lot better production/mixing. I like all of these songs. My least favourite is Supper's Ready, because it seems kind of Satanic, but it's actually very tongue-in-cheek. I don't think Peter Gabriel really believes in hell. There's lines like 'Feel your bodies melt... Dad to Dam to Dum to Mum...' that are acutally rather amusing. I like the first side stuff a lot, too.

Another thing worth noting about this album is it's pretty slow-tempo from beginning to end. I know this may be a more artistic effort than their later stuff, like 'abacab', but it isn't quite as much fun. And this is before Banks really got into synths, so there's only a few organ sounds on here, though the song-writing is great and perhaps some people prefer very well written music compared to psychedelic sounds, like 'The Waiting Room'. I personally perefer a mixture of the two, for example, 'Stagnation', 'Snowbound' or 'Lifeless packaging' This album seems the least oriented towards unusual instrumentation, and the most oriented around solid songwriting.

My favourite track, 'Watcher of the skies', is a charging rocker. My second favourite is 'Can-utility and the coastliners', which I think could be about the old Viking King 'Canute'. It's a great medieval tale. Time Table is a nice piano ballad.
