Description: This is simply one of the great American recordings. In the early '50s, Frank Sinatra was a has-been. The Tommy Dorsey/Harry James crooner had caused riots in Times Square in 1944, but Columbia fired him in 1952. Capitol signed him to a contract requiring him to pay for his own sessions. Meanwhile, arranger Nelson Riddle was working at Capitol; he had previously written charts for Nat Cole, including the classic "Mona Lisa." He and Sinatra would fit together like ham in a glove, or however the saying goes: Nelson was the velvet glove, and Frank was the prosciutto. Most critics agree that Sinatra's Capitol recordings with Riddle are among his best. A Swingin' Affair, one of the most upbeat and lighthearted Sinatra collections, presents 13 unsurpassable standards from the likes of Porter, the Gershwins, Kern, and Ellington. --Stanley Booth

Reviews:

Cut out! Are you kidding?

This is absolute required listening for anyone with even a passing interest in Sinatra. If you've wondered what all the fuss was about, the whole story is here. A perfect selection of tunes, with Nelson Riddle still letting his swing side keep his elevator music side in check. Every cut on this disc is a miniature masterpiece; taken together they show Sinatra's awesome range of expression and swing. At cut-out prices, we should all buy a case of these and give one copy to every single person we know...

It's A Gas Man!

When I was growing up my folks played the best music on our hi-fi, Frank and Ella and Erroll Garner et al. "A Swingin' Affair" was one of their favorites and now some forty years later it is one of my favorites. From the first cut to the las,t it is Frank and Nelson Riddle at their swingin'est. A must for your collection.

Just Plain Swinging Sinatra

This album is a classic. The songs are superb and fun to dance to. Nelson's arrangments are top notch..... GET THIS ONE and u will have a fun way to learn more about the great PRE-ROCK songwriting.

Night and Day

Released after "Songs for Swingin' Lovers". Nelson Riddle's arrangements are absolutely fabulous. And Sinatra's voice is great.

Quite Possibly the Best Sinatra Album Ever!!

I own most of the orginal Sinatra-Capitol vinyl, including this one. I can't wait to get my hands on the Remastered CD version of this LP. This collection of songs is quite possibly the best compilation Frank Sinatra ever did (better than "Songs for Swingin' Lovers). From the album's swingin' opener, "Night and Day," to other classics, like "I Won't Dance," and "Oh! Look at Me Now," this is Sinatra at his definitive best. Even the filler songs on this album ("I Guess I'll Have to Change My Plan," "I Got It Bad...," and "If I Had You") are terrific. This 1957 classic showcases Sinatra at his finest. This should be the first classic Sinatra album you purchase!
