Description: A fine collection of songs from some of Broadway's most memorable shows, sung by Frank Sinatra in the '40s and early '50s. This Columbia release showcases a rarity--the full length "Soliloquy" from Carousel, in which Sinatra performs the complete bridge between the two songs--a version available only on this disc and on John Raitt's original Broadway show recording. The record finds Sinatra in strong form, with equally memorable versions of "If I Loved You," "Some Enchanted Evening," and "We Kiss in a Shadow." --Stephen M.H. Braitman

Reviews:

The album title pretty much gives you the selling point here

If you do not have Frank Sinatra singing "Soliloquy" from "Carousel" then this album is one way of picking up, even if it technically two tracks (remember 45rpm singles?). During the 1940s and 1950s pretty much all of Columbia's artists were recording covers of songs by Rodgers & Hammerstein (this was how I discovered Jo Stafford, my favorite "forgotten" Capitol artist). Yes, it is a bit strange to hear Sinatra singing "Oh What A Beautiful Morning" from "Oklahoma" (especially since you have two versions, one with the Tucker Singers and one without), but over his recording career Sinatra sang just about everything at one time or another. Besides, it is not like he is singing these Broadway songs in a theatrical way. The result is that you know the singer and you know the songs, but probably have not heard these recordings (which is why buying the album would be a good thing). Of the classic Rodgers & Hammerstein songs "If I Loved You" and "Some Enchanted Evening" would be the best of the bunch, while of the lesser-known songs "It Might as Well Be Spring" would be my favorite. These are not classic Sinatra songs, but taken together this is a most enjoyable album, whether you are a fan of Sinatra or Broadway. I happen to be a fan of both, so that is enough for me to rank this a 5 star album even though it does not have a certified "hit" on it (just my favorite Sinatra recording performance). If this album also inspires you to track down similar recordings by other Capitol artists that would be a good thing as well.
