Description: A 20-track collection from the Reprise years that tries to cover too much ground. Very Good Years sweeps from the early 1960s to 1979's "New York New York," focusing on the most obvious Sinatra standards. The watchword here isn't art but populism. That's not a problem, really--but it means that serious fans (or those aspiring to be) will be better served elsewhere. It would be a fine introduction for the casual music lover, but so would any decent collection. For a compact Reprise-era sampler, try either this one or something from the Greatest Hits series. --Gavin McNett

Reviews:

A Moment of Silence for the Chairman of the Board...

WOW, this compilation is FANTASTIC. This was the first Sinatra CD I bought because I had heard a couple of his songs and heard all these great things about him. I figured what the heck? I'll buy one of his CD's. I was completely blown away. To this day I blast this music and break into song because Mr. Sinatra is THE MAN. He's the type of singer that anyone interested in music can appreciate, and here are some of his best performances. This is a MUST HAVE for any lover of popular music, easy listening, jazz or just Frank Sinatra period! May he rest in peace.

Great Primer for those of us new to Sinatra's music

I am not of the Sinatra Generation. I only knew his music through movies. A friend was playing one of his records during an Italian meal at their place. I inquired about the music and was told it was Frank Sinatra. Since I thoroughly enjoyed the music (and the meal) I wanted to order an album. I chose this album from a whole host of them and have not been disappointed. It was amazing to me how many of the songs off this album have been in the movies or television. My age of course is shown by my lack of knowledge of this legends influence. I have to say if your looking for and primer on Sinatra this is a great place to start. I think I'll make lasagna and throw this record on and sip good Chianti.

pure pleasure

As a kid, I grew up with my mother listening to the full compliment of Frank Sinatra albums (she went to several Frank concerts in the late 1940's). Many, many years later, I heard the song "The Best is Yet to Come" in a movie called "The Corrupter" of all things. Without knowing the title of the song, I irrationally went out and bought several compilation alumbs of Sinatra's work. Without a doubt (to me), this is the best of them all. I agree with the review that says it is about his obvious standards, but what struck me was the strength of emotion that comes through with each song and how varied those emotions are. Several of the songs I don't recall ever hearing are now among my favorites, particularly "Fly Me to the Moon" and "Summer Wind". So, I would say if you are looking for a broad sampling of Frank's work - this album is the one that really hits the mark.
