Description: A best-of pared down from so many other Columbia boxes and cardboard tombstones, this 36-track, double-disc collection showcases a boy whose voice and heart had yet to break, revealing the man within. Sinatra would re-record most of these tracks for Capitol and Reprise, and the later performances were at once weary and wise. here, Francis Albert is still copping Crosby moves and singing over the screaming teenaged girls, his voice as reed-thin as his body. The Columbia recordings--including "All or Nothing at All," "Night and Day," "Body and Soul," "Someone to Watch Over Me," and myriad other standards he'd make his own until his death--are cool, but not nearly as warm as his later records. Buy it to find out what he wasn't, then marvel at what he would become.

Reviews:
Best Columbia Compilation
This boxset is NOT just a preview of the great music Sinatra would later record at Capitol and Reprise. It is an excellent overview of a period in Sinatra's career that is often overlooked and almost always underrated. You'll eventually want the complete Columbia recordings, which are available in a beautiful 12 CD box set. Until then, this is the best collection of Sinatra's Columbia recordings. The music is pure, sensuous, and performed with impeccable taste.
The Best Two-CD Collection of Frank Sinatra in the 1940's
If you are looking for an album which will remind you how good things used to be, and still can be, you have found the right album. This collection features the most famous and loved tunes that Mr. Sinatra immortalized during the 40's. These are the songs you can listen to over and over again. You can hear and feel Frank's youth and innocence contrasted against the sometimes cold hardships of his life (and your own). If you are looking for the cream of Sinatra but don't want to pay $100-200 for a complete box-set collection, this is your set. Since aquiring these CD's I have not listened to anything else. They're that good!!
