Description: Assuming former Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl dreads the thought of forever being known as "the guy from Kurt Cobain's band," the last thing he'd want to hear is that the debut album from his new band Foo Fighters sounds much like one from the deceased duke of grunge. Unfortunately, Nirvana comparisons are not only inevitable, they're bound to consume the dialog surrounding his quartet entirely. Perhaps it was unavoidable osmosis: Grohl, Foo Fighters' lead singer-guitarist, wrote most of these tunes during breaks from beat-keeping for his former band leader. It's natural that Cobain's knack for balancing hard and fast with musical and melodic would wear off on Grohl, as well as on bandmates Pat Smear (who also played with Nirvana), William Goldsmith, and Nate Mendel (both of Seattle's Sunny Day Real Estate). Grohl even unveils vocal cords that tread lightly on Cobain's gorgeous growl. Of course, many Nirvana-be's have tried to capture Cobain & Co.'s teen spirit, and all failed; that Foo Fighters succeed in creating a powerful heavy rock album that's neither noisy nor stale is a measured accomplishment in its own right. So bask in the familiar neo-garage punk (a.k.a. grunge) of "I'll Stick Around," "Oh, George," and "Good Grief," because we certainly won't hear anything from the style's originator in the near future. And, who knows, you might even be surprised by Grohl's own pop chops on the mellow Byrds-like folk rock "Big Me" and catchy rave-up "This Is a Call." The Foo Fighters prove that even if you can't go home again, it sure is comfortable hanging out next door. --Roni Sarig

Reviews:

an awesome debut album, but...

this is one of the best debut albums that ive heard for a long time. even though this isnt as good as other foo fighters albums, its still awesome. well, you cant really expect much else when people like dave grohl and pat smear are in a band together. it has plenty of good songs on it, such as this is a call and big me, but some of the lyrics, drums, and other big parts of a song could maybe use a little work. besides that, its a really good cd.

The drummer can play guitar too? And sing?

The Foo Fighters self titled debut is really a Dave Grohl solo album. He sings, he plays guitars, he drums (duh). It's his work, and it's pretty impressive.

So, does it sound like Nirvana? At times. "I'll Stick Around" works the soft/loud formula into a perfect modern rock song. "Weenie Beenie" and "Wattershed" are cacophonous slices of punk that aren't too far removed from some of Nirvana's less radio friendly stuff.

But Dave certainly has his own muse as well. "Big Me" is a breezy, bubblegum pop song that definetly wouldn't have fit on any Nirvana record. He also ventures into power pop (the incredibly catchy "This is a Call") and even jazz (mainly the opening verse of "For All the Cows").

Other highlights include the lush, dreamy "Floaty", the raging rocker "Alone & Easy Target", and the pensive "Exhausted".

Although "The Colour and the Shape" and "There Is Nothing Left To Lose" are slightly more consistent overall, this is a terrific album from a talented multi-musician.

Best Songs: This is a Call, Floaty, Exhausted, Alone & Easy Target, I'll Stick Around.

Fantastic Foo

The Foo Fighters debut album is one of their best. Dave Grohl created the band in 1995 following the Nirvana break up and he goes with a more pop-rock approach. The album has great, catchy tunes, and it features some heavier stuff as well for the hard rocker.

Some of the songs:

This is a Call: This tune is an excellent opening to the album, with a very energetic, catchy chorus. It's one of the best tracks on the album.

I'll stick around: This is the heaviest track off the album and it is also one of the best. It has a strong, upbeat feel to it with great drums.

Big Me: This short, clean electric ballad made the Foo Fighters a success. All around good song, with a great music video.

Alone & easy target: This is my favourite off the album. It has a wonderful guitar feel to it at the beginning, and possesses a strong chorus.
