Bye Bye Avril Lavigne
Fefe Dobson's debut album gives other pop-punk princesses (i.e. Avril Lavigne) a real run for their money. Her CD is totally underated. Every song is spirted and great, and Fefe's vocals are just as good as any other pop singer these days.
1. Stupid Little Love Song - This track is a great album opener. It's got funny lyrics, and a cool chorus. 8/10
2. Bye Bye Boyfriend - This song starts out slowly, and then picks up the pace in the chorus. It's really cool. 9/10
3. Take Me Away - A great teenage anthem. It's probably the best overall song on the album. 10/10
4. Everything - Another perfect song. It, yet again, starts off slowly, and then picks it up in the chorus. Really good. 10/10
5. Rock It Till You Drop It - This one is really fun. It's sounds really California beach in a punkish way. Totally cool. 9/10
6. Revolution Song - Really pretty. Slower, but good. 8/10
7. Kiss Me Fool - Fefe's voice really comes through on this one. I love it. It's one of the best. 10/10
8. Unforgiven - One of my favorites. It's like hard rock, and has the best guitar. It's sad, though, at the same time. (Think lyrics) 10/10
9. We Went For a Ride - Sort of repetitive, but still good. It's got a good beat. 8/10
10. Give It Up - Another slow-paced until the chorus song. It's really cool. The lyrics are great. 10/10
11. Julia - This track is really beautiful. I think it might be my favorite. It's really sweet and sad. 10/10
12. 8 X 10 - This one is pretty good. It's slower, but nice. 8/10
13. Rainbow - It totally doesn't sound like anything else on the album. Not punk AT ALL. Nice, though. 8/10
Fefe's album is awesome and is a real treat for any fans of Avril. It's even better than Avril. Rock on Fefe!
Original, refreshing, and a whole lot of fun.
What a delight to peel off the shrink-wrap on a CD, pop it in the boom box, and find a dozen fresh, original, well-performed songs instead of the "top-forty hit plus carelessly chosen filler tracks" we often end up buying. With vocals that run the gamut from little-girl cuteness to punk-powered grit and one guitar-fueled musical hook after another, Fefe Dobson makes rock & roll integrity look--and sound--easy.
Her eponymous CD is an example of terrific artist-producer chemistry, for starters. Jay Levine knows how to bring out the best in his artist without taking over; Fefe knows how to let him, without getting lost in the shuffle. The result is one terrific album on which her songs and vocal performances are beautifully produced and arranged. The whole CD seems to glow with a sense of loving fun.
For young teens, two "message" songs might provide comfort and support. "Unforgiven" is written to a father who has abandoned his family ("Where were you when I plugged in my first guitar/It's too late for I'm sorry"), "Julia" is a hand extended to a friend who is--somehow or other--slipping away. But the first track, "Stupid Little Love Song," is the most full-tilt fun, with its quirky lyrics, punk guitar riffs, and rock & roll attitude.
It will be interesting to see where this young Canadian's career takes her--meanwhile, she has given us a collection of songs that is very easy to love
