Reviews:
Staple
Like many, I grew up with Eurythmics, from their gender-bending androgeny in the early MTV years, through what I consider the creative and musical high point of their career with "Savage", into Lennox's solo career, and even the brief foray into their reunion status. The band is legendary; they carved out their own little niche and filled it solidly and successfully.
But I never could completely get on board with the Eurythmics, despite their obvious talent. I guess it's just a matter of personal taste.
That being said, I really like this CD. It's a staple in my collection--one that represents a sound that my CD catalogue wouldn't be complete without.
Lennox has an incredible voice, and Stewart puts together 80s synth-pop that goes above and beyond. Together, it's soul meets new wave. Definitely an original sound.
This CD is perfect for fans, like me, who really could do without the entire Eurythmics anthology. The best tracks here are "I Need A Man", "Sweet Dreams", "Would I Lie To You", "Missionary Man", and one of the all-time greatest songs ever recorded, "Love Is A Stranger".
Everything else is good. Eurythmics are typically always a crowd pleaser. You really can't go wrong with a CD like this.
Another best of that's not complete...
I can't and won't say anything negative about the tracks that are included. But I never understood the reason for releasing a best of collection and not put ALL the singles on it. Where's Sex crime, (I like to listen to) Beethoven, Julia, It's Alright (Baby's Coming Back) ? So my only negative remark would be about the shame that those tracks actually are NOT on the album.
Don't buy the U.S. edition - Get the U.K. one
It has Sexcrime. In fact, if you go to Amazon's UK site you'll see the following differences in its track listing:
1. Love is a stranger
2. Sweet dreams
3. Who's that girl
4. Right by your side - UK EDITION ONLY
5. Here comes the rain again
6. There must be an angel (Playing with my heart)
7. Sisters are doin' it for themselves
8. It's alright (Baby's coming back)
9. When tomorrow comes
10. You have placed a chill in my heart - UK ONLY
11. miracle of love - UK ONLY
12. Sex crime (1984) - UK ONLY
13. Thorn in my side
14. Don't ask me why
15. Angel
16. Would I lie to you?
17. Missionary man
18. I need a man
Isn't this a better edition? Of COURSE it is.
PRISTINE POP PLEASURE
Celestial melodies and pristine poetics! Eurythmics have created some of the most uplifting sounds ever to grace this world, a series of songs like a necklace of multi-coloured precious stones. That often-awarded, seldom-merited title The Perfect Pop Song applies to their bittersweet Love Is A Stranger (and Perfect Pop Video for the same song). Every rhythm they took, they made their own: consider the eurythmocalypso of Right By Your Side. The cutting edge of the side mentioned in that song became Thorn In My Side, along with When Tomorrow Comes an example of the ferocious beauty attained in the slow ballads of Eurythmics. Their emotional range is unique: compare the acidly cool, stark menace of You Have Placed A Chill In My Heart to the joyful exuberance of There Must Be An Angel. Lennox & Stewart encapsulate all that is special & valuable in the music of the 80s, a decade that belonged to them as much as it did to Prince, Madonna and Bruce Springsteen. Most of the best are here, with a few shameful omissions. The first and most glaring is Shame, their 1986 tribute to 60s pop. Also missing are the orientally flavoured Belinda and the suicidal She's Invisible Now from the obscure first album "In The Garden." Maybe we'll find them in the Box Set some day
