Description: Etta James was just 22 when she made the recordings for this album in 1960 and '61, but she had already established herself as a youthful belter of spirited R&B numbers. Like Aretha Franklin in the same period, James felt pressure from recording executives to go in different directions. Chess was unsure whether to market her as an R&B singer or to press her toward mainstream adult pop and jazz. This CD presents both sides of the coin, with James doing rousing R&B numbers such as "Seven Day Fool" and the protosoul of "Don't Cry Baby," lounge tunes like "One for My Baby," the jazz-flavored ballad "Fool That I Am," and Ellington's "Don't Get Around Much Anymore." It hardly matters, though, for James's emotional immediacy and potent delivery make all the material her own. --Stuart Broomer

Reviews:

Etta At Her Early Best

Her "At Last" CD is REALLY GREAT but this disc is even BETTER. Better variety of songs and more complex arrangemewents with less clutter to them. For example, both albums have a pseudo jazz/r&b novelty cut on them but "Plum Nuts" doesn't have the hokey backup vocals that ruined "Tough Mary" on the "At Last" LP. In Fact, Riley Hampton's arrangements have the class of Nelson Riddle's work for Sinatra and the earthiness of Belford Hendricks' arrangements for Dinah Washington. Etta has made more famous recordings but "The Second Time Around" will always be one of her landmark achievements.

Find this Classic Etta CD--It explodes with "Oh, Yeeeah!"

It has track to track excellence! From Plum Nuts to (I'll Be Your) Seven Day Fool to two of my very favorites. Her rendition of One for My Baby (One More for the Road) and the superb, smoky, sultry Fool That I Am. That tune--Fool That I Am--is perfection! Trust me.
