Description: There is always cause for concern when a promising new artist follows up a solid debut with a live album rehashing all the same material. After seeing Erykah Badu steal the "Smokin Grooves Tour" summer of 1996, however, it only makes sense that her record company decided to release
Live as a stopgap between her next studio recording. To put it mildly, the Badu live experience is anything but typical. There is a kindred bond between the singer and her audiences which translates wonderfully onto the disc. It's in the warmth of the songs, the intimacy with which Badu addresses the crowd, and the constant chants of "Erykah!" emanating from the masses. For her part, Badu does a wonderful job revisiting the material from her superb debut
Baduizm. She also takes on an assortment of covers, ranging from Roy Ayers's "Searching" to the Mary Jane Girls' "All Night Long," making each one sound distinctly her own. The most captivating moment, though, is a new number called "Tyrone," in which she most eloquently tells a dense boyfriend to take a hike.

Reviews:
Amazing
I've been listening to this album for 7 years and every time I come back to it I'm reminded of how truly incredible it really is. As a singer/songwriter I would consider it a huge accomplishment if one of my greatest albums (the greatest in my opinion) is the live one. This album has had a big influence on me and opened a door to a lot of other stuff I listened to after hearing it. Erykah really lets you in on the jazz styles that have influenced her music. Each track is a treat.. I would highly recommend this album to anyone..
Even if you're not a big fan of Erykah's music, you need to give this a spin.
Live - actually 4.5 stars
I bought this disc shortly after it's original release - I actually got this one before her debut album! Anyone who's seen Erykah actually perform live knows that she puts on one hell of a show - she engages the audience and definitely sets the mood for herself to perform at optimal level.
The standout tracks to me are:
Ye Yo - a beautiful song about motherhood
Otherside of the Game
Stay - homage to the great Chaka Khan
Next Lifetime
Tyrone - still hilarious & to this day I get a chuckle out of this song
Overall it's an excellent addition to your collection if you're a Badu fan and I would highly recommend it to those who aren't familiar with her work.
What a dissapointment
Just another over rated so-called talented R&B artist. Erykah, don't leave your day job honey.
She uses snappy euphemisms to get her dimwitted messages across with a dry off beat annoying voice. Man what ever happen to the real divas, with rich singing voices. This and all of her albums are a joke. She is most definitely a one hit wonder chosen by those tone deaf people who buys her "music."
Erykah, Buy-Don't
