Description: New Age diva Enya first became widely known when her 1988 album
Watermark sold 4 million copies and launched the single "Orinoco Flow." Her follow-up,
Shepherd Moons, was even more successful, selling over 10 million copies despite its slightly lower grade of ethereal enchantment. In 1997 she released
Paint the Sky with Stars, an assortment of her best work from these two early albums plus gems from 1995's
The Memory of Trees and the soundtrack to the BBC series
The Celts. The most melodic and atmospheric examples of Enya's lovely Celtic-flavored songwriting shine on this disc. Those unfamiliar with the former Clannad member will find charm in such sweet lullabies as "Marble Halls" and "China Roses" while delighting in the more energetic "Book of Days," "Storms in Africa," and "Caribbean Blue." Overall, an outstanding collection from an artist who gives New Age a good name.

in my opinion the extra tracks are worth the extra money
Enya's "Best" Turns To Gold
Putting together an Enya "Best Of" album can be tough, considering the fact that all of her work is so wonderful. Choosing certain songs over others can be very difficult. Let's break it down: Tracks 6 and 16 (The Celts, Boadicea) are from "The Celts" (I Want Tomorrow, is sorely missed), Tracks 1, 10, and 11 (Orinoco Flow, Storms In Africa Part 1, Watermark) are from "Watermark" (Why not Storms In Africa Part II instead? And Exile? On Your Shore? Evening Falls...? All are sorely missed), Tracks 2, 3, 8, 9, and 13 (Caribbean Blue, Book Of Days, Shepherd Moons, Ebudae, Marble Halls) are from "Shepherd Moons" (this album is given the most room (5 tracks) which is good except that it sort of takes control of the album's tone instead of giving us even doses of all 4 albums), Tracks 4, 7, 14, and 15 (Anywhere Is, China Roses, On My Way Home, The Memory Of Trees) are from "The Memory Of Trees" (Good choices in my opinion to use these songs), Tracks 5 and 12 (Only If..., Paint The Sky With Stars) are the new tracks for this album (perfect songs, one being the obvious show piece while the other is very quiet and peaceful. Good contrast) Track 17 (Oiche Chiun (Silent Night)) is from The Christmas EP (lovely bonus track to have here). The fact that this is a 24kt Gold disc is just icing on the cake. Even though some songs are missed, this CD does do what it should...leave you wanting more. Now if only "A Box Of Dreams" was released in a special 24kt Gold edition. That would be Heaven....just like Enya.
Most of her best, but not all
There is a difference between 'best' and 'greatest hits', in my opinion. No doubt Enya's music is as soul-stirring to everyone else as it is to me, so I feel the need to defend some of Enya's less well-known songs.
On this collection, there are too many airy-choir songs (anywhere is, only if, china roses) that don't do a lot for me. Beautiful, of course, but a lttle too trademark. Seemed as if they were catering to what they felt will sell instead of putting her true best on the album.
I think her 'best' should have included songs like 'The Longships' and 'Lothlorien'. Not chart-toppers, but excellent pieces of creativity. Her instrumentals are every bit as great as her vocals--original, captivating, inspiring. Still, far as compilation albums go, this is probably the best I've heard. Thoroughly satisfying.
Very beautiful and refreshing!
The first time I heard a song by Enya, another person in my dorm was playing it loudly on her stereo. Normally I would get annoyed by this, but the song (I think it was "The Memory of Trees") was so beautiful that instead I tracked the girl down to find out who the artist was. I got the albums "Watermark", "The Celts", "The Memory of Trees", and "Shepherd Moons" for Christmas a few months later and instantly fell in love with all of them. Enya's work evokes a variety of strong emotions: joy, excitement, inspiration, sadness, and, in a couple of songs, even fear. It's very refreshing music to listen to after a stressful day or during a lunch break. The songs "Marble Halls", "The Memory of Trees", and "How Can I Keep From Singing" I know by heart because I've listened to them so often. In regards to Enya's new album, "Paint the Sky With Stars", I would rather buy an album with ! mostly new songs and a couple of the more popular old songs rather than get only two new songs and a bunch that I already have. However, I do think that anyone who has never heard Enya's music before should get this album first, because after hearing it, they will no doubt want to get the other four.

Wonderful Intro To Mehdi
I've always enjoyed Enya and this album is no exception, but while reading some of the customer recommendations posted on this page I discovered an Group by the name of Mehdi (pronounced meddie). After searching online I found (SoothingMusic.Com) and listened to the samples...
I was instantly blown away by the quality of this music and so I gave it a try and now that I have listened to these CDs several times I really must say that although I'm still an Enya fan I find Mehdi's instrumentals to be a nice addition to her CDs. Instrumental Heaven by Mehdi is just awesome. I have them both in my multi-disc CD player and love the way they compliment each other. I highly recommend that you give this artist a try or atleast just go listen to the samples, I have a feeling you'll be glad you did.
