Description: A wonderful gift, this handsomely packaged four-CD box set (purple velvet cover, gold-foil lettering) also serves as an inviting midcareer retrospective of an uncommon vocalist-sonic architect.
Only Time: The Collection is a mix-and-match assortment of tracks spanning Enya's first five U.S. releases (including her 1987 debut,
The Celts) and embellished with a half-dozen B-sides not found on her previous U.S.-released albums. Chief among them are "May It Be" (from the
Lord of the Rings soundtrack); "Isobella," a hushed, slowly evolving beauty formerly available only in Japan; and "Oiche Chiun (Silent Night)." The set's fourth disc is an enhanced CD that includes 1996 video footage of Enya performing "Oiche Chiun" during a BBC special. Also included is a 44-page, tall-format booklet filled with regal artist photos, song lyrics, and commentary on each track written by lyricist Roma Ryan. Some notations are throwaway items. Others are insightful, such as the unfinished lyrics (about lost love) for the instrumental title track to
A Day Without Rain. The order is a jumble, usually mixing tracks from two recordings onto one disc. The stylistic difference between her dated 1987 debut and the sophistication of 1988's
Watermark makes for some occasionally jarring listening on disc one. On the other hand, the opening sequence on disc three ("After Ventus," "No Holly for Miss Quinn," "The Memory of Trees") is mesmerizing. Overall, nicely done.

Reviews:
A perfect opportunity wasted!
The music in this box set is wonderfull, and the artwork is delightful. That's very well ... BUT ... the arrangement of the music is completely senseless, there's 4 discs here, where they could've had it all and more on 3 discs!
What they SHOULD have done was to take the old 'Box Of Dreams' set, and then add a couple of songs on each disc to make it up-to-date and more complete. Personally, I think they should have done something like this:
Disc 1: 'Oceans' ... Orinoco Flow, Caribbean Blue, Book Of Days, Anywhere Is, Only If, The Celts, Cursum Perficium, I Want Tomorrow, China Roses, Storms In Africa, Pax Deorum, The Longships, Ebudae, One My Way Home, Boadicea.
Now fill in in appropriate places: The Triad (from The Celts), Wild Child, Only Time, Flora's Secret and Lazy Days (from A Day Without Rain).
Disc 2: Clouds ... Watermark, Portrait (Out of the Blue), Miss Claire Remembers, Shepherd Moons, March Of The Celts, Lothlórien, From Where I Am, Afer Ventus, Oriel Window, River, Tea-House Moon, Willows On The Water, Morning Glory, No Holly For Miss Quinn, The Memory Of Trees.
And fill in in appropriate places: Fairytale, Bard Dance (from The Celts), A Day Without Rain, The First Of Autumn and Isobella.
Disc 3: Stars ... Evening Falls, Paint The Sky With Stars, Angeles, Athair Ar Neainh, La Soñadora, Aldebaran, Deireadh An Tuath, Eclipse, Exile, On Your Shore, Evacuee, Marble Halls, Hope Has A Place, The Sun In The Stream, Na Laetha Geal M'Óige, Smaointe.
And fill in in appropriate places with Once You Had Gold (from The Memory Of Trees), How Can I Keep From Singing (from Shepherd Moons), May It Be (from The Lord Of The Rings soundtrack) and Lullaby (Song Of The Sandmen). They could throw in the Oiche Chiun video as an extra if they wanted.
This would give a 3-disc set with each 20 songs, seperated in themes like the original Box Of Dreams to ensure a good flow of the music. It would be much more complete than the present collection [in fact it would contain all the songs from her triad of masterpieces: Watermark, Shepherd Moons and The Memory Of Trees amd compliment with highlights from The Celts and A Day Without Rain along with a couple of B-sides and none-album material]. Also, it would be much more enjoyable musically than what they've come up with here. For me, this seems more like an opportunity to do something really great, which they just threw away, and instead they charge the fans a lot of money for a mediocre collection, that in fact offers nothing to the collection of normal CDs.
Danger - does not play on all CD players!!!!!
This is an "Enhanced" CD - WATCH OUT!
These do not play on:
a. Older CD players
b. Computers
Why? Because the publisher has blessed us with all sorts of Software that automatically loads itself on to your computer. One reviewer noted only 3 hours of music on a 4 disk set.
Why? Because they loaded Quicktime, screensavers and even a short cutsy "movie" of Enya.
Because the CD is a few years old, it trys to load an older version of Quick time on your computer. While free updates are available, watch out. Unless you are a MacIntosh user, Quicktime is definately NOT good software. It wants to take over your Computer's media associations, etc.
Also, these CD's will not play on some older CD players due to the presence of software.
Do yoursellf a favor - Skip this Set. There are other sets available for less.
Also, never buy "enhanced" CD's as they contain extra junk.
I'm all for recycling but....
I love Enya's music. She'll be remebered as one of the greatest composers of the 20th century. My gripe is that there's just collections of old stuff and hardly anything new here. As a first Enya collection it's fine but when will we see an all new album with all new material? Has Enya run out of inspiration or has she got composer's cramp? This is the kind of stunt we see every now and then from old rockers when they start to run low on cash.
