Description: Emmylou Harris's formula has been to match a crack crew of left-of-center country players with an assortment of tasteful tunes and head into the studio with a nonintrusive producer. Now and then (most notably the 1980 bluegrass collection Roses in the Snow), she tampers with her basic blueprint and comes up with something exceptional. Wrecking Ball is one of those. Daniel Lanois's radiant production no longer seems as fresh as it did on albums by U2, Peter Gabriel, and Bob Dylan, but here its hum enfolds Harris like an electric blanket. Lanois's usual recruits, including U2 drummer Larry Mullen Jr., and New Orleans regulars Malcolm Burn, Brian Blade, and Daryl Johnson, lay down a solid base for Harris's weary vocals and Lanois's buzzing guitar. At its core, Wrecking Ball seems almost too finely calculated. Hot producer plus sought-after songwriters plus venerated performer frequently totals to deadly bore. Here, however, all that calculation adds up to something. --Steven Stolder

Reviews:

Emmylou at her best

This is my favorite Emmylou album. All the songs melt into one long ballad that is wonderful and somber. Her voice lingers foever through the album and I can always listen to this no matter what mood I am in. A definte must for Emmylou fans and music fans all around. A definte must!!!!

My daily prayer

I have listened to this Album almost daily for 10 years now.

it is not only my favorite Emmylou Harris album, it is MY FAVORITE album period! From begining to end it is perfect. Each song takes me deeper into a world rich in emotion. Emmylou's voice is truly haunting, Daniel Lanios prodution is brillant, a perfect blend of emmylou's voice and intruments. ALL of the songs on this album are wonderful, but, I must mention Lucinda Willam's "sweet old world", one of the most beautiful songs every written.

this is a landmark album that deserves to be spread across the world. Buy it, enjoy it, and spread the Gospel!

This gal is royalty in my book

I have been a lover of Emmylou's music for a quarter of a century (plus some). This cd is superb and one of my favorites. I cannot listen to "Orphan Girl" and "Sweet Old World" enough. Thank the powers that be that she has never been in the same category as Shania Twain, Faith Hill or the likes. Will they still be going strong in 25 years? I don't think so.
