Description: On
The Slim Shady LP, Eminem wants it all. He's conflicted, you see; the world has treated him badly, and he wants to respond in kind. But he isn't a straight-up gangsta--this is, after all, the first release on Dr. Dre's Aftermath Records, his post-Death Row-era venture--and Eminem (born Marshall Mathers) doesn't really want anyone to follow in his footsteps, which leads to some interesting contradictions on this album. In the first single, "My Name Is," he's self-deprecating, rapping about his poor upbringing and his hairy palms. But on the very next song, "Guilty Conscience," he plays the devil to Dr. Dre's angel--that is, until Eminem brings up an incident from Dre's devilish past, rapping, "You gonna take advice from someone who slapped Dee Barnes?" Later, on "'97 Bonnie & Clyde," he turns Will Smith's "Just the Two of Us" on its ear, making it a tale of murder; but on "My Fault," he actually feels bad--though whether it's for the girl he overdosed or for himself is tough to figure out. With his nasal Midwestern tone, Mathers has a clean, clear flow, and the production--by Dr. Dre, Marky, and Jeff Bass--is crisp but consistently fun. With his outlook, it's tough to take Eminem too seriously, but he's made an album you don't have to take seriously to enjoy.

Reviews:
Classic debut not classic album classic debut
for a debut em does it like a pro could of been better but like it or not eminem saved rap it was going no where til now
Great debut
this is probably Em's best album lyrically and just the best. its weird to me how his voice got deeper instead of that nasally voice in this one. every song is good even though I'm shady and cum on everybody sound alike and get annoying after a while. the best songs are: still dont give a, just dont give a, as the world turns, bad meets evil, and role model. im out
Where it all started...the best came first
Ok, first of all, this is Eminem's best album. Sure, he has matured and become a faaaaar better lyricist, but it all went downhill when he started making his own beats. Now, all his songs sound the same and all have that damn synthetic clarinet in it! This album is friggen RAW! The lyrics are raw, the beats are raw his flow is raw. This is as god as Eminem gets. On top of that, this album is friggen ridiculous because Marshall didn't have to worry about what he said when he recorded this. No political songs, no rap beefs none of that. This is a true clssic album and is the only reason Eminem is as popular as he is today. Marshall Mathers LP was a decent album too but the other 2 shouldn't even be comapred to these two albums. People who don't like or don't understand these albums are those who are into comemrcial Eminem. This remains a classic and was one the day it came out. It is because of this album that I respect Eminem, it's that genious. Put down Slim Shady LP and Encore and pick this one up or just buy one of the two cause they pretty much sound the same.
