A GREAT COLLECTION OF MATERIAL
I think the last reviewer is a bit harsh. Asking if we need more live versions of "Hound dog", "Big Hunk", etc I would say yes.
First of all, Elvis was the greatest live performer of all time and having been to young to have ever seen him live I like listening to the recordings of his live shows (every Elvis show was taped and you can be rest assured many still, even to this day, remain unreleased meaning many more may still come out).
Yes, his live version of "hound dog" is short, but like I mention in my revew for the 1973 concert CD, how on earth can you expect Presley to perform every song in it's entirety? It was sung at a concert, not a studio, in concerts a lot of the top acts cut their songs down, due to get everyone's favourite in, indeed a lot of people would go home let down if they cut out full songs in a live show, rather than a verse or two of the song.
This album is not an original album. In 1972 after Elvis recorded "Burning Love" as a single, it was a hot hit. RCA then rushed out the cheaply priced album "Elvis - Burning Love and Hit's from his movies", most of the album hardly consisted of Elvis' best material.
That, however, didn't stop it selling like hot cakes. However, this time, RCA/BMG have decided to make a new "Burning Love" album, collecting 18 track Presley recorded in 1972.
The casual fan may find a lot here that they don't have, especially of all they own is the Greatest Hit's CD. "Separate Way's" a b-side, it one of my fave songs. A song about a failed marriage, something Elvis was experiencing himself around the time.
Also included is Elvis' live version of his '60s classic "Little Sister" and a take on The Beatles "Get Back".
This is a fantastic compilation of the king in 1972, showing that The Elvis of 1972 could still match up to the Elvis of 1956, no matter how critics tried to claim otherwise.
ANOTHER LOST ALBUM
Remember "STANDING ROOM ONLY"? An album, even with a catalouge number, supposed to be released sometime in 1972. This is it! Here are the studio and live tracks that would have been included in that album. This is what "should have been" at the time. Instead most fans shook their head over "BURNING LOVE AND HITS FROM HIS MOVIES VOL.2" Here are excellent concert performances from Elvis in Vegas '72. And also the studio recordings from march the same year. Overall a very nice album. I really did this!
I'm leavin'
I wish people would stick to highlighting the songs they like instead of putting down the one's they don't. I'm leavin' is a beautiful song with some great lyrics and chord structures that I suppose you have to understand both to 'get it'. It's about a guy so fed up with lonliness he's about to just get the hell outta there. "Tried so hard each time, each time I just can't take it. Feeling fast vibrations and I just can't fake it. Living from day to day chasing a dream.............I'm leaving" It's a great song. It's a collection of great songs. "Where do I go from here" is one that stands out for me. A necessary collection for any Elvis fan.
ORIGINAL ALBUM UNLEASHED!
What most don't know is...this was an album planned for release by RCA back in the nearly 1970s to be titled "ELVIS: STANDING ROOM ONLY"; it was scrapped after the surprise poor chart performance of it's advance release single "AN AMERICAN TRILOGY". The album, although promo'd on the sleeve of the single, was dropped and focus was put on the Madison Square Garden concert album. I really think this CD would have made more sense if it would have been marketed as a "lost" album, something even the liner notes don't even make mention of. It is really sort of a companion piece to THAT'S THE WAY IT WAS. In this context, the album makes PERFECT sense! The CD has four extra tracks not part of the original lineup. The sound quality is excellent, packaging insightful. Another great release from the Ernst Michael Jorgenson, Roger Semon and Dennis Ferrante, the 3 guys doing wonders with RCA/Elvis catalog.
