Reviews:
Elvis at his best .... live in concert!
This is without a doubt the greatest concert Presley performed. I have heard lots and Presley was the greatest showman, but on this night he shone at his very best.
I think some reviews are harsh, especially the criticism of the short performance of "Hound Dog", which i think is very good, yes it was very short (50 seconds) but this isn't a studio album and Presley had a lot of hit's and it would have been impossible to sing them all, especially in their entirety. As he said when fans were shouting out the names of their favourite songs at this show, Elvis joked "yeah, I'm gonna do 'em, all 429 of 'em , i'll do 'em".
This is the many sides of Elvis captured in Concert. The Country singer ("Welcome to my world", "I can't stop loving you", "I'm so lonesome I could cry"), The religious side ("You gave me a mountain", The R&B Elvis ("Steamroller Blues") and most importantly performances that show him as Rock's true King ("Suspicious Minds", "A Big Hunk O' Love", "Hound Dog", "Long Tall Sally, "Whole lotta Shakin' going on", "Johnny B. Goode", etc).
Both "Burning Love" and "American Trilogy" had been hit's recently just before this show and are included here too.
The show closes with a wonderful version of his 1962 number 1 hit "Can't Help Falling In Love", then Elvis has left the building, however, on this CD we are treated to several bonus tracks that didn't make it onto the original album, that were not actually recorded in a concert (my favourite of these is "Early Morning rain").
Whilst I agree Presley never did an album as good as this again, I think that is mainly due to the fact he died 4 short years after it and it's not an if he didn't have anything more to offer in that time ("Way Down", "Promised Land", "Moody Blue", etc, etc).
Nevertheless this is a collection that captures the worlds greatest live singer at his very best!
the best!
all that needs to be said here,is a few short words; if any man has ever looked better, performed better or sung better than EP did during this concert in hawaii, then i have yet to have witnessed it in my 43 years...completely awesome...scott...
The King's Last Great Triumph
While there's no denying that the best way to appreciate this concert is in a visual format - it was, after all, a television event - the remastered CD of ALOHA FROM HAWAII is a fine way to add the audio portion of Elvis' last, and arguably greatest, genuine triumph to your music collection.
Offering the complete 24-song concert program plus five additional numbers recorded the same day to pad out the broadcast time, ALOHA presents the King in very solid vocal form, delivering powerhouse renditions of songs as diverse as "My Way," "A Big Hunk o' Love," "The American Trilogy," "Johnny B. Goode," "What Now My Love," "Love Me," "I'll Remember You" and "Early Morning rain." While arguably not as outstanding in purely musical terms as the 1970-era concerts captured on albums like ON STAGE and THAT'S THE WAY IT IS, ALOHA proves that the King still had everything in superb working order as late as 1973, and his band is as tight and rocking as ever. The shift toward big production numbers, capped off with awe-inspiring sustained high notes, may leave a few Elvis fans nonplussed; but the King's ability to tackle an ever-wider range of material with style and skill more than compensates for the relegation of oldies like "Hound Dog" to the status of half-minute tossoffs. By all means, grab the video if you can; but if not, this disc is well worth having for anyone interested in Elvis' often underappreciated latterday output.
