Description: On their third album, the Eagles finally produced a No. 1 hit with "The Best of My Love," but most of On the Border is marked by tough rockers, not sweet ballads. "Already Gone" is a brusque kiss-off and "Midnight Flyer" a bluegrass kicker, while "James Dean" recalls the '50s rebel icon, and the title track reflects on paranoia and creeping Big Brotherism. The Eagles also cover a Tom Waits tune, "Ol' 55," and pay tribute to alt-country godfather Gram Parsons on "My Man." The album title is prophetic in the sense that the band that made this record (bolstered by the addition of guitarist Don Felder) was on the verge of greatness, but not quite there yet. --Daniel Durchholz

Reviews:

An Absolute Classic

Although not quite as popular as their other more 'well-known' records, On The Border offers some outstanding cuts, including the more obscure and not as widely known ditty, James Dean. Don Henley remains one of the best male vocalists--ever. The Eagles still stand as one of the greatest bands ever in rock. And if you haven't had the opportunity to check them out in concert, I highly recommend you do so. They're a tough act to follow live, and continue to be one of the most enduring groups of the twentieth and twenty-first century. This record rocks to the hilt, and is definitely worth checking out.

Not the best, not the worst from the Eagles

Thanks for reading. Actually 3.5 stars

I love all the Eagles albums, This is their third album, and not as good as their first two. Don Felder was a welcome addition to the band on this album, adding a rawer, harder, rockier edge to their music.

Does contain some gems including "Already Gone " " My Man" " Is it true" and " The best of my love"

Fans will love it, but if you're new to the Eagles you might want to try some of their later stuff first.

This is the best Eagles line-up, but they didn't quite get it right here. The Successor to this " One of These nights" is the best in my opinion.

Still, this is a good album, and a must for fans of this genre!

Enjoy!

One of my favorite Eagles albums

Actually, it'd be 4 1/2 stars.

The final track on this album, "The Best of My Love", became the big hit off this album, but this album (with the addition of guitarist Don Felder) is filled with rockers, not sweet make up songs. Here's the rundown:

1. Already Gone - A rockin' edge to a great start, sung by Glenn Frey.

2. You Never Cry Like a Lover - A look at a relationship gone bad. Good song.

3. Midnight Flyer - Ugh. Filled with banjos, annoying lyrics, and weird noises. The low point of this album.

4. My Man - Bernie Leadon does a solid job on this tribute to Gram Parsons.

5. On the Border - The title track, it's very catchy and has some weird, but cool, voiceovers by everyone towards the end.

6. James Dean - It's a trbute, of course. A three and a half minute tribute. Weird, but good.

7. Ol' 55 - Love this track. A bit mellow, but very powerful.

8. Is It True - A very good song by Randy Meisner.

9. Good Day in Hell - A muscular, hard edge. Cool track.

10. Best of My Love - The #1 hit off this album as mentioned earlier, this song is a bit, well, different. But still good.

Bottom Line: I'd say grab this, Eagles fan or not.
