Description: An album that only a devout New York rap-radio fan could enjoy, DJ Clue's The Professional is filled with tracks by chart-topping hip-hop acts who've already been overexposed. It's not even a true DJ album: Clue doesn't mix the songs (which is probably a blessing), and there's a minimum of turntable tricks--just beats, rhymes, and redundancy. Artists like DMX, Big Pun, Noreaga, Nas, and Jay-Z practically have side careers as cameo artists, and while they--along with the rest of the usual suspects--appear here as "featured" guests, fans of their work are better off seeking out albums under their own names. While some tracks are better ("Gangsta Shit") than others ("It's On"), there are simply too many songs that fall into a New York rap aesthetic already taken to the brink of exhaustion. If that's your cup of tea, sip away. Otherwise, reach for something else. --Oliver Wang

CLUE!!!

DJ Clue - The Professional (Roc-a-Fella, 1998)

While he's not a mixing and scratching DJ, Clueminatti is more like a house party DJ (he plays what you want to hear with no turntable tricks whatsoever). Big deal, anyone can do that, but DJ Clue's secret lies in getting the hottest stuff first (thus always calling his tracks "exclusive ish"). Actually, as Puff Daddy states in The Professional's intro, Clue was the guy he wanted to beat up because he leaked one of his Biggie records.

Though his street mixtapes are a little better, this album is still good for a major-label debut. And for once, a long list of superb rappers on the project does NOT make for a wack album. DMX gets things rolling with two winners, "Ruff Ryders Anthem" remix with Jadakiss, Styles, Drag-On and Eve; and "It's On" (an obvious single because it's censored). You can expect to find more bangin' collabos from Mobb Deep and Big Noyd on the title track, Jay-Z and Ja Rule on "Gangsta Ish", Boot Camp Click on "Come On", and Cam'ron, Big Pun, Noreaga and Canibus on "Fantastic 4".

You can also expect some filler on here like JD and R.O.C.'s "B**** Be a H*", The Sauce byproducts Made Men on "Made Men" (but unsurprisingly the beat is tight), and Missy, Mocha, and Nicole on "I Like Control". "That's the Way" is also wack because Foxy Brown spits a lame verse while it's hard to tell when Mase and Fabolous (Sport) is rapping because both of them sound and rap exactly alike. And on top of that, sampling The Tom Tom Club is played out.

If you can deal with those flaws and Clue's constant screaming throughout the album ("Do remember", "Clueminatti!", etc.), then pick this album up for a future Class of '99 party. -EJR

Hot mixtape by CLUE

This mixtape has some fire tracks on it and is worth pickin' up. Features some of the hottest rappers from NY as well as some tight production. The best tracks are:

#2 remix to X's classic anthem (DMX, Styles, Jadakiss, Drag-On, Eve)

#4 (Canibus, Big Punisher, Noreaga, Cam'ron)

#5 (Nas)

#6 (Nature freestyle)

#7 (Jay-Z f/ Ja Rule)

#8 (Memphis Bleek)

#15 (alright track by Fabolous - one of his first ones)

#17 (Mobb Deep & Big Noyd)

#18 (Raekwon)

#21 (M.O.P)

#22 (Boot Camp Click)

P.S. - Check all my reviews

just take it for what it is

like everyone said if you buy this thinkin your gonna get Clue scratchin on every track you're gonna be dissapointed, but i just choose to look at it for what it is, a descent mixtape. Only about half the songs are good but the ones that are have hot beats. Tracks by DMX, Drag-On, Mobb Deep, Nas, Nature, M.O.P., and Raekwon all have tight beats and the gems by Jay and Ja and the last track by Boot Camp are really good. Overall it's descent and gets put in my cars CD player from time to time. It's not a classic but it's worth ownin
