Reviews:
Dionne Warwick's Best Warner Bros. label effort
A old school mix of marvelous mellow harmonies expressed by Dionne Warwick. Hightlights include her first #1 record, "Then Came You" (with The Spinners) and the obscure "Move Me No Mountain". The most die hard Warwick fan should have this CD in their music collection. Music critic and reissue producer, David Nathan is responsible for bringing this rare 1975 album to CD for the first time. Kudos to him and his staff.
Dionne's Overlooked Masterpiece from 1975
This has long been one of my favorite albums from Dionne Warwick as every song is well done and some are truly outstanding - I was 11 years old then and still love it today. In addition to the title hit "Then Came You" Dionne should have had another big hit with the very overlooked "Move Me No Mountain" which is a true gem in both vocal performance, arrangement and orchestration. Other great highlights include "It's Magic", "How Can I Tell Him", "I Can't Wait Until I See My Baby's Face" and "Getting in My Way". This album is a real winner and Dionne's voice is primo - these songs still sound fresh today. I believe Dionne would have had more hits from this if Warner's had known what they were doing. Now if only her 1972 eponymous "Dionne" album (another gem) would be released then her best pre-Arista 1970s work could be widely rediscovered and enjoyed.
ULTIMATE DIONNE WARWICK SOULFUL CLASSIC!!
Dionne hit the top of the charts with the Spinners in 1974 with the Thom Bell classic "Then Came You" and followed with the best pure soul album of her brilliant career in 1975. This extraordinary album was produced by legendary composer and producer Jerry Ragovoy who wrote and produced soul classics for the late soul legend Lorraine Ellison of the "Stay With Me" fame. Dionne proved up to the challenge of diving into songs which stretched her voice to brilliant new heights never heard before and created a real masterpiece. Opening this classic collection is the energetic up tempo "Take It From Me" which was a R&B hit and from this great opener you know this is going to be a set that cooks! Lushly orchrestrated "We'll Burn Our Bridges Behind Us" flows beautifully and has a smoldering vocal from Dionne and it is amazing that this was not released as a single as it has the sound of being a huge hit!! Glorious gospel heights is where Dionne goes vocally in the masterful "Sure Thing" and the cooking title song "Then Came You" follows. Hypnotic and haunting vocal from Ms. Warwick on "How Can I Tell Him" captivate and the majestic "Move Me No Mountain" is a total winner and a great ride! "I Can't Wait To See My Baby's Face" is a highlight on Aretha's greatly & sadly overlooked "Running Out Of Fool's" album and is given a totally sensual gorgeous reading here that stands up wonderfully next to Aretha's great version. Although the joyous and magical "It's Magic" show writing credits by Jerry Ragovoy/Jacob Brockman, this great rhythm number has the sound of a Bacharach song with his unusual and interesting tempo changes! The two classic DIVA turns are saved for last and what incredible songs and performances they are!! "Who Knows" is a lush vocal on a great song and all stops are pulled out on the incredible "Getting In My Way" which may well be one of the most extraordinary vocal performance's to date of Dionne Warwick's brilliant career!! Not since the classic "Don't Make Me Over" has Dionne let herself go so completely with an all stops out passionate vocal that soars to glorious heights!! When I get to this amazing performance I hit that repeat button more times than I will admit and so will you if you love to get into a great vocal performance. This set is a keeper and order it fast while it is available. This is one of my all-time favorite albums-BRAVO DIONNE!!!!
