hrmmm..

I don't know why I am reviewing such an obscure item, but oh well. This CD single 'Only When I Lose Myself' comes to us from the highly influential synthpop pioneers Depeche Mode and doesn't let us down. The first mix of the title track is just right.. nicely executed and slick, which makes us wonder, why the gratuitous and over-lengthy additional mix? Admittedly, lengthy mixes are a wonderful thing, but unless I have forgotten, the extra mix here is just a stretched version of the first with not nearly enough change to justify the running time. It just makes you want to cry from boredom.
Not all is lost though! Track 2, also too long, is a nice little breakbeat-shuffle thing that fits well in relation to the other tracks. The third track is an extremely pleasant surprise! Dave Gahan gets to show off his melodramatic but endlessly entertaining voice once again with this uptempo house number, complete with catchy lyrics and an infectious melody.
The last track is a very lengthy (but tolerable this time) dance mix of the Violater track 'World in my Eyes'. Complex house rhythms are thrown on top of a gradually climaxing epic of lovely synth lines and D. Gahan's chanting voice. A blissful way to end this collection..
All in all it probably deserves only three stars, but I am in a decent mood; and, it comes in a cool DVD-ish digipak thingy. Mine did anyway. Enjoy!

Absolutly Fantastic! if you like this try the band, "ON", Martin Gore's remix of "soluble words" is awesome. You can check out a sample at depechemode.com. The album from ON is great too!
