OK DM track meets OK remixers
This CD epitomizes remix-culture mediocrity. Let's start with the original track. Depeche Mode staple, but nothing to write home about in the first place. At least the original's melodic lines work together. The first mix, the Bushwacka Tough Guy mix, is classic uncreative remixing at it's best. Though it does bring in some lovely atmospherics and a reasonable house beat that doesn't go over the top, it commits the classic remix flaw by ripping the vocals totally out of context and forcing them right into the new song whether they work or not. It's not as bad as say, the 'Can't Get You Out of My Blue Monday' travesty, but it still could be alot better. The second remix is, as the name suggests, primarily acoustic as it sends the original guitar line through a reverb box(?) and throws a beat on top of it for a few minutes. the keyboards are a nice touch but don't redeem anything per-se. The Octagon Man mix is a bit tough to make heads or tails of.. it's sort of experimental for it's own sake and puts an un-catchy crunch beat on top of the whole thing and runs the vox through some grizzlifiers or vocoders or something. Extremely forgettable..
This leads me to the kid606 mix, which is the reason I bought this in the first place. Yes, I am biased, but this is probably the best mix here, with the possible exception of the first. Endlessly creative, the sixer-kid takes elements of the original and twists them about with a ring modulator and some trademark clickity glitch-pops until it becomes a nicely floating ambient track. It succeeds as a remix because it is a totally new take on the song that sounds totally different while it retains the obvious feel of the original. Too bad the...remixes are present as well to drag it down. I still don't understand why respectable artists like DM are still handing out their tracks to be butchered by these dime-a-dozen remixers only to be thrown onto four or five different maxi-single discs for loyal fans or teenage girls to throw their money away on. Yeah, maybe the DJ's like em, but why even bother with a CD release? This is not to mention that these offensively homogenous remixes that you'll find on any single of this type totally undermine any artistic quality or integrity the original track may have had. Buy it for the excellent 606 mix if you are into that, but otherwise stay far far away and never support remixes again!
