Description: Call it what you want: emo-core, alternative, sneaker metal...the Deftones seemed the most unlikely quartet to come out on Madonna's Maverick Records. The music is agro, abrasive, and damn near primal from the disc's first few seconds. Tool-like whisperings of frontman Chino Moreno can bring the mood from disconcerting to downright dangerous in seconds. Heavy, chunky guitar riffs, mad raps, and testy tempo changes make this a must-have for fans of whisper-to-a-primal-scream alterna-rock. Killer tracks: "Bored" and "7 Words." --Denise Sheppard

Reviews:

Deftones' Adrenaline

The Deftones' first album, Adrenaline, is unique in that none of their other albums have quite the same sound. This album is edgy, straight rock, while their newer CDs, such as White Pony and their self titled album, are directed more towards electronic techniques and vocal tricks. In fact, if you listened to their first album and their last album one right after another, unless you were a diehard Deftones fan, it is doubtful that you could tell the two were by the same artist. Songs such as "Lifter" and "Root" are great examples of the trademark Deftones sounds, with great guitar riffs and the cool breathy vocals of Chino Moreno that are found on any Deftones CD. The lyrics on this album are wonderful because they are thought provoking, interesting, and emotional while still being completely metal. The lyrics are similar on other albums, what changes is the style that they are delivered. The Deftones are my favorite band because they are so unique, so innovative, so unafraid to try new things. They always have something new to delight the listener and make them think about, and that is exactly what I look for, and what I hope others look for, in an artist. There is honestly no one I would compare them with, they are one of a kind and always will be in my book. After listening to Adrenaline, I would definitely recommend buying Around the Fur. All in all, this CD is a great one to have in your collection and in your CD player... Enjoy!

I'm impressed. Good debut.

Considering this genre of music (nu-metal, alternative metal, etc.) I think the Deftones were definatly at the top of the game from the beginning. Nu-metal, rap metal, and alternative metal bands usually just plain suck, but Deftones albums manage to pull together enough interesting influences, smart musical ideas, talented musicianship and good hooks to earn them all at least an "above average" grade.

Adrenaline is a good album. It's not amazing, or even very consistent, and to be completely honest, it's probably their worst album, but it's definatly still good. I was blown away when I first heard this. I thought to myself, "an alternative metal band with guitars that sound like actual guitars, instead of massive bubbly farts? And the guitars are playing actual RIFFS, instead of overdistorted power chords laden with hip sound-effects?" Hardly believeable. In truth, there's nothing fundamentally wrong with this album, but the reason I gave it only 3 stars is because, although the energy level is high and the playing is great, some of the songs don't really go anywhere. "Engine Number 9", in particular, sucks. "One Weak" starts off pretty decent, but it's poorly arranged and not very interesting, so it usually passes by without me even noticing.

Overall, though, the band sticks with good riffs, and keeps the listener entertained with plenty of nice tempo-changes, off-kilter arrangements, and smart transitions.

The songs on Adrenaline are, on the whole, well-crafted, but when they're not, they're pretty annoying and sometimes so mediocre that they go unnoticed, and Chino's voice got MUCH better later. Also, a lot of these songs sound pretty similar to one another. The production is awesome, so sure all the songs SOUND cool, but a well-trained ear will realize that some of the riffs on here are pretty awkward. Although this is a good raw high-energy album, it's missing the stylistic diversity and texture of their later albums.

just pure emotion, passion and raw energy

this is my last favorite deftones ( i dont know why) i think because i like they most complex stuff? maybe. i my favorite song is engine no 9
