Description: Hours... is a lush, largely serene self-portrait through which David Bowie atones for mistakes and reflects on regrets. Not that this is the chameleon's swan song, but it's a fitting time for him to speak out honestly about his life--a life that's been lionized, criticized, and mythologized by the masses for three decades. Bowie's Hunky Dory muses were once "driving their mamas and papas insane," but here they are aged and faded ("The Pretty Things Are Going to Hell"); yet the man himself could not be more graceful or vibrant. --Beth Massa

Reviews:

A very good soft rock album

I was really suprised when I first heard this album because it was so different from the first album I heard by David Bowie (Space Oddity), but it's quite good in a different way. The lyrics are a little confusing but nice nonetheless, all of the tracks are pleasant to listen to, and the song "Seven" really stands out - i'd say its among the most beautiful and touching rock songs I've heard. I'm not giving it 5 stars because it dosen't quite have the oomph of the REALLY good albums like Kid A or Sgt. Peppers, or even Space Oddity, but if you like soft modern rock, it's definatley worth your 15 bucks.

Skip This One

For me, this is Bowie's weakest album. "Thursday's Child" is the only decent, melody-driven tune on the entire dismal affair. As a huge fan of David's, this CD is most disappointing. I find it incredible that most of the reviewers preferred this CD to "Earthling", which is melodically stronger than this effort, depsite the drums & bass experimentation. Buy any other Bowie CD but steer clear of this one!

Very mediocre

There's a couple of good track on Hours (Thursday's child, Something in the air and Seven) but overall it lacks quality songs. The instrumentation is a bit too passive and sparse too for my taste. In theory that could've worked well, since the lyrics are quite depressive and the overall mood is a heavy one, but it all sounds bit uninspired to me. Add to that the lack of inventive songwriting and you have a very mediocre album.
