Description: The French twosome behind Daft Punk, Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel De Homem-Christo, get away with an awful lot. They go around impersonating aliens and robots in their interviews, they put records out only once every three years, and they make music that evokes a million other artists--while not really sounding like any of them. The keyboard noodlings of Jean-Michel Jarre are in there somewhere, along with the otherworldly imagery and giant hooks of '70s rock icons like Boston or even Electric Light Orchestra. There are dashes of 1999-era Prince and oodles of new wave and disco cheese, from Harold Faltermeyer and Gary Numan to the Bee Gees, all set off with efficient house beats. So how have they managed to position themselves as electronic music's next great crossover artists? On Discovery, the follow-up to the 1998 worldwide smash Homework, the answer is obvious: they have no shame, and they know how to make us dance.

Starting off with the irresistibly hummable "One More Time," the record blows through a head-spinning array of styles and samples, creating a pop-culture stew of funky loops and dance-floor anthems. "Aerodynamic" eschews breakbeats for an Yngwie Malmsteen-ish guitar interlude that somehow ends up meshing in a crazy blend of stomping bass lines and hyped-up harmonics. "Digital Love" starts off silly and gets sillier, but the monosyllabic lyrics lull the senses just right, allowing the song's summery groove to grab hold with authority. "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" is a resounding standout amidst the retro/Vocoder deluge that transpired after Cher's Believe turned the kitchy disco device into a worldwide pop music trend, spinning a clever groove around an ever-escalating string of computerized seduction. Everywhere on the record, gigantic beats are dropped with pinpoint precision, giving songs a momentum that transforms repetitive melodies into sudden revelations. The record's only misstep, the aptly named "Short Circuit" utilizes a keyboard riff that is nails-on-a-chalkboard awful, but it can't keep this from being one of the best records of 2001. --Matthew Cooke

Reviews:

For Fans and Newcomers Alike

Daft Punk's Discovery album is extremely balanced in that it is half instrumental and half vocalized. Each song has quite a different atmosphere and thus offers something for every mood. Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger is easily the best known song on Discovery, and also the best to dance to. It offers the variety of tones and sounds that One More Time lacks, but One More Time still manages to hold its own. Face To Face offers a slightly less electronic sound than the rest of the album. Too Long contains a very mellow beat, with some wholesome lyrics. Aerodynamic is in my opinion the best instrumental song on the album, with such a wide array of sounds and distortions. Superheroes features a very nice retro beat. Crescendolls has a very futuristic sound and beat, and it holds your attention. Digital Love is somewhat like One More Time, only less repetitive and it has a very happy tune. Short Circuit offers a very cool compilation of futuristic sounds and it progresses very well. High Life is a lot different from the other songs, but is similar to Face To Face in its feel and rhythm. Something About Us offers a well balanced mix of instrumental and vocalized beats. Veridis Quo has a very aged sound to it, and is very appealing to the ears. Not really danceable, but great none the less. Night Vision features sort of an eerie beat and is very fitting of its title. Voyager features a soft sound and atmosphere, and yet a faster paced beat than Something About Us. All in all, for such a well-balanced album, I give Discovery 5 stars. It is a great choice for newcomers, and old fans will be pleasantly surprised.

It's not Daft, it's not Punk...it's just awesome.

One day while scrolling through my CD store, I found this record, and without ever having heard it, I got it. I'm so glad I did. Daft Punk are my favorite techno/house artists, and after giving reviews to their great old-school "Homework" and their brand new "Human After All", this fantastic record needs a review too!

1. One More Time- Great dance track, period. (9/10)

2. Aerodynamic- A good track, "Aerodynamic" reminds me of "Pheonix" from "Homework". (7.5/10)

3. Digital Love- One of my favorites, "Digital Love" is a song that has the ability to make me dance and chill me out at the same time. The highlight is its amazing synthesized guitar solo about 3 min and 30 sec. in. (10/10)

4. Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger- The best track on this record. You just hear it and you rock out and start dancing, then you'll start singing along, and...just...a phenomenal track. (10/10)

5. Crescendolls- Also a great track, "Crescendolls" is another song that makes you get up and dance. (9/10)

6. Nightvision- This song just chills you out, and you just lay back...and relax...and listen. (9/10)

7. Superheroes- A good track, "Superheroes" has a good thumpy beat and pads that fit the mood and title perfectly. My favorite part of this track has to be the synths that zip through the air, fighting crime and protecting Jump City from Slade, Cinderblock, and other villians. =) (7/10)

8. High Life- An okay track, "High Life" has a thumpy beat like that of "Superheroes" and...well, I feel there's not much to say, it's just okay. (5/10)

9. Something About Us- Ah, another chillout track. Like "Nightvision", it's just that song that lets you sit back, relax, and listen. (9/10)

10. Voyager- Another of my faves! "Voyager", with it's synth pads, cool beat, and funky bass, is a great song. Like "Digital Love", it can chill you out and make you wanna dance at the same time. (10/10)

11. Veridis Quo- This track has a very Middle-Ages feel. Very cool beat, awesome synth blips, and some of the best pads I've had the pleasure to hear. (8/10)

12. Short Circuit- Awesome beats and synth riffs make "Short Circuit" a cool track. Unfortunately, the second half of the song isn't so good, when weird square-lead-style synths breakdown into fuzz. (7.5/10)

13. Face to Face- "Face to Face" is very good, despite the bad reviews it's gotten. It uses the "sample split-seconds of stuff to create an unintelligible collage of sounds" style previously used on "Homework"'s "High Fidelity". Its alternative rock-styled-synths, coupled with an awesome beat make this a very cool track. (9/10)

14. Too Long- Although it is, as the title says, "too long", once you get into this track it becomes very good. It's flange synth and the classic electronic beat make "Too Long" a good ending to a fantastic record. (9/10)

Thank you for taking time to read this review. Peace out!

Like a fine wine.... or a really good cheap wine.

When the electronic scene exploded in the mid to late nineties, one of the bands that stood out from the house and trance dominated genre was daft punk. With their electro-pop epic Homework (1997), they single-handedly set the bar for electronic LP's and broke the mold of the mindless dance format. Combining simplistic yet brilliant hard hitting beats, grinding yet melodic synth lines, and the perfect amount of vocoder (that electronic voice sound); Homework went against the grain and was a perfect album in every way, not just in the electronic music field but in music in general.

Discovery followed Homework four years later when the electronic scene had shifted to a more commercially acceptable club atmosphere instead of the underground rave scene and it was definatly reflected in the album. Being their sophmore album I was looking forward to somthing similar to Homework and was initially disapointed in the incredibly retro sounds of Discovery. Sounding somthing like Midnight Star meets Brian Wilson circa 1968, this album is very Poppy. It could be played at chucky cheeze or major magic's as easily as it could be played at a trendy European disco-tech. However if it is taken with a grain of salt and the hope that some kitschy elements were added knowingly; the album starts to become incredible. Songs like Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger, Crescendolls, and One more time- become instant classic party anthems the first time you hear them if you don't take them to seriously.

All and all I think the album went a bit too far with the lightness of the sound (I can not forgive the line "music got me feelin' so free, celebrate and dance so free). You can only eat so much cool whip before you get sick. So for this sole reason I gave it 4 insted of 5 stars. Still highly recomended.

One of the best album in techno history!!!

Supertronic

Why do I find myself year after year listening to Discovery? Because it is one of the best albums out there I have ever heard. Even if you don't listen to techno or tronica there is something about this album that sets it apart from the rest of the albums in this genre. It's breathtaking, and rapidly changing, you never know whats coming next. Each song is well-crafted and packed with as many hooks as some bands used on an entire album.

From the dance tracks like "One More Time" and "Harder,Better Faster Stronger", to the variety of songs including "Face to Face", a nice vocal set, every song is a new experience. The album flows well and what the last song lacked the next makes up, its constant and hypnotic. I don't usually enjoy albums like this, but Discovery is an album that can suck the non-believer into this electronic world. It's addictive and so good that if you call yourself a music lover and you don't have Discovery, your lying.

Daft Punk's "Discovery" gets

A Bliss of 9

This is the best cd ever!!!

I think that Discovery is a great cd, except that only the first 5 songs are good. One more time has great music, and great words, but is kinda repetative. I still like it. Digital Love is ok, but it is kind of silly in the begining. Aerodynamic is an AMAZING song. with the mix of techno guitar, techno percussion, and sfx, its the secound best song on the whole cd. Harder, better, faster, stronger is the all time best song i have ever heard. Between the music, the techno voice, and sfx, i love it. I especcially like the part after the chorus (work it harder, make it better, do it faster makes us stronger, holin never power faster, hour work is never over), and the part after that, where they morf the voice with a guitar. Crecendolls is very good, and it has the 2nd best music on the cd (Aerodynamic gets 1st place), but the words are a little strange. I give it 4 stars, only because only the 1st 5 songs are good. But it still is a great cd.
