Description: British club DJ turned singer Craig David took the world by storm while still in his teens with his boastful debut,
Born to Do It. It sold 7 million copies while he still bunked at his parents' home in Southampton, England. Two years later, David has slogged through the minefields of sudden stardom and lived to sing about it, which he does with stylist aplomb on
Slicker Than Your Average. David has sacrificed some of his milk-fed innocence but none of his braggadocio, as the title attests. His sound is harder, more anxious, and much more suitable for clubs than the soft, breezy nu-soul of his first outing. This time, he deals with darker matters, such as the press's relentless scrutiny ("Why are you watching me when you should just let me be Craig") and the dangerous pitfalls of fame ("I'm not the man I used to be"). He's
not the man he used to be, for fame seems to have shaken the scales from his eyes. This one-time wide-eyed romantic no longer pines for his perfect love, instead casting a jaundiced eye at the women vying for his attention on "What's Your Flava." But his newfound complexity and makes for a much more interesting album than his debut. It's a relief to watch David trade in his clean-cut pop styling for a more urban edge, rife with old-school R&B and hip-hop élan.

Reviews:
Craig IS Rnb's King...they just dont know it yet...
Poor Craig...he takes a few years off, deals with fame and success, tries to give his fans what he thinks they want, and a good majority of them just snubbed their noses at him. They called it 'American' music...the apparent biggest insult one can give to a British artist! Of course these are also the same people who declare any Black artist 'Rap' (apparently rnb/pop/and rap are all the same thing) and Kylie Minogue's 'Red Blooded woman' 'American'. I rest my case!
Overall 'Slicker then your average' isnt a BAD CD...in fact its quite brilliant! Sure he didnt release some of the right songs as singles *but* he got it right most of the time and we can love him for that :)!
Slicker then your average kicks off with the title track, a very catchy but very long (about 5 mins) rant about well himself. Craig has never been shy of self promotion (he said his own name on Born to do it at least 30 times) but the 5 minutes makes this song kiiiiinda long. Still not bad though!
'Whats your flava' was an odd choice to be the lead single. Its not the strongest or weakest track its just one of the oddest ones. Its a 'Prince inspired beat' number that one would swear he had to be smoking something to come up with the lyrics! Apparently women are ice cream and they have many similarities...only women cost you more.
'Fast cars' is one of those songs you say 'why didnt he release THIS in America?' Quite brilliant and could have been innovative at its time! 'Hidden Agenda' (the second single) is one of Craig's best tracks ever! Very sweet and 'slick'. Anybody who says he lost his romantic view I say look here...I guess maybe its a bit more cynical but still its there!
'Eenie Meanie' and 'You dont miss the water' arent really anything special. Im not a ballad fan so maybe thats why 'You dont miss the water' doesnt speak to me...I can admit its very nicely written though!
'Rise and fall' is kinda the 'heres what happened between Born to do it and now' track. Very sad actually! Craig is asking his fans forgiveness of his changes and well with that accent and adorable bum how can we not?
'Personal' is one of the most umm sexy tracks Ive heard well ever. And Ive listened to Lil Kim! Its a slow love making ballad and honestly its sexy and steamy without being filthy and nasty! Sure the second verse starts 'Im behind you in the bedroom with your hands up against the wall...' *but* he does it in such a classy way that it'll make you sweat without making you blush!
'Hands up in the air' tries to snap you out of your 'Personal' daze but its not until '2 steps back' your bound to come back to reality. 'Whats changed' is kinda 'Eenie Meenie' but thankfully 'World filled with love' finishes the CD nicely. Its a faster paced ballad that makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside although Im not honestly sure if that was the purpose (possibly more a 'so there' to the British press...)
Overall a BRILLIANT British Rnb CD. Forget Usher...Craig is your man! And now I sit back to wait for CD #3...
Give him a chance
i dont think the urabn communtiy gave this boy a chance. He can really satisfy us too. PERSONAL was tight and should be recognized as R&B.
hot 2 def......
i love this cd to pieces..... craig david came a long way from being a dj.... i like hislast cd but this LP takes the cake..... it seems edgier...i like the way this brotha sings but i am still waiting for the long awaited third album....
hands down the best track on the album is 'you don't miss your water'... he has a great singing voice especially on an emotional song like that.... it almost sounds like an acoustic song.....
'rise and fall' w/ sting, 'hidden agenda', '2 steps back', 'world filled with love' 'what's your flava', 'fast cars', and 'slicker than your average' are my favourite tracks on the album....
buy this album if you like great dance songs to keep the party "retarded" all night....
