Description: You go, girl! Riding on the coattails of the Latin explosion, teen sensation Christina Aguilera decided to tap into her Ecuadorian roots (on her father's side) and brush up on her Spanish. With her newfound tongue, she translates five tracks of her multiplatinum self-titled debut. "Genie in a Bottle" becomes "Genie Atrapado," "Come On Over" becomes "Ven Conmigo," and her other major hits get code-switched and granted the added value of Spanish guitar and dizzied-up Latin disco beats. Fans, especially those who understand the language, should rush to pick up this album. In the year since Aguilera released her self-titled debut, she's honed her chops and figured out what kind of artist she wants to be: namely, an R&B heavy-hitter, not a pop princess. To prove her staying power and worth, she does serious vocal acrobatics with so much confidence and clarity on Mi Reflejo, you'll forget that five of these songs are old, that all are translated into a language other than her native tongue, and that she's a modest 19 years old. --Heidi Sherman

Reviews:

Christina Did a Great Job

I loved this album so much! Christina Aguilera may be a bit more mature now, but I definently like this album more than the garbage she's putting out now. My favorite tracks were Una Mujer(What a girl wants), Genio Atrapado(Genie In a Bottle), El Beso Del Final, Cuadno Es Contigo, Ven Conmigo(solamente tu)(Come on over), and Por Sempre Tu. I really wish they would have done the original version of What A Girl Wants in spanish though, not the Video Version. I am a huge fan of the original version, but now you can't get it anymore, it's very rare. Anyways, I think Christina Aguilera did an excellent job on this album and she has an amazing vioce and astonishing talent.

Christina Goes Latino

At the time, Christina's foray into the world of Latin music made a lot of people balk. It smacked of desperation to cash in on the then 'Latin explosion', but a re-evaluation of this album sees it age quite well, and poses the question: was it really that bad?

The resounding answer is, no. Initially I had expected that the four Spanish remakes of the 'Christina Aguilera' singles ('Genie In A Bottle', 'What A Girl Wants', 'Come On Over' and 'I Turn To You') wouldn't sit too comfortably with the rest of the largely Spanish-sounding tunes. Surprisingly, this album is a lot more cohesive than you'd expect. 'Genie Atrapado' is still the edgy highlight as it was on Christina's English release, and 'Ven Comigo' and 'Una Mujer' ('Come On Over' and 'What A Girl Wants', respectively) are peppy and vibrant despite a slightly more awkward translation in the latter. That said, at least they opted to redo the more uptempo, radio-friendly remix of 'What A Girl Wants' instead of the slow jam version which appeared on initial pressings of 'Christina Aguilera'.

However for Christina fans, it is the original songs here which make 'Mi Reflejo' a worthwhile purchase. Having no knowledge of Spanish makes me far too uneducated on the matter to comment on whether or not Christina's Spanish is good or otherwise - but from a purely aural point of view, she sounds amazing. Although there was only a year between this and her debut, Christina's voice had grown stronger and more expressive making particularly the ballads on this set rival the highest points on 'Christina Aguilera'.

'Falsas Esperanzas', the obligatory Spanish party track, is the best of the uptempos and the 'I'm-channelling-Gloria-Estefan' works in her favour. 'Cuando No Es Contigo' is more of the same, with its sing-a-long chorus and tropical feel propelled by bongo drums and an infectious brass / rhythm section. On the ballad side of things, 'El Beso Del Final', 'Contigo En La Distancia' and 'Pero Me Acuerdo De Ti' are beautiful tunes exquisitely sung and are some of her best recordings to date. There is one minor misstep in an ill-advised ballad which is nothing special, but it's surrounded by enough great inclusions to not let this marr the record.

This is a must-have for Christina fans because there are a couple of essential songs all fans should own. For the more casual fan, it's probably not as digestable as 'Christina Aguilera' but shows a more mature Aguilera than a lot of the filler on her first record. It certainly makes you realise that we haven't heard the half of what this girl can do yet. Try to pick up the import version of 'Mi Reflejo' though, which includes a few bonus remixes for your dollar.
