Description: Despite the acclaim accorded Born to Run and Darkness on the Edge of Town, this is the album that broke Springsteen into the big leagues, thanks to "Hungry Heart," then his most pointedly commercial song; it had new fans swooning but some old ones grumbling for the "poetic" Springsteen of days gone by. Not to worry--though more economical lyrically, The River had something to offer nearly everyone: There's old-time frat rock ("Sherry Darling"), empathetic character studies ("The River," "Stolen Car," "Independence Day"), passionate rockers ("Out in the Street"), dramatic ballads ("Point Blank"), and even a couple of good-natured goofs ("Cadillac Ranch," "Crush on You," "Ramrod"). A sprawling double-disc set, The River offers proof that Springsteen could do it all and could do it better than virtually anyone else. --Daniel Durchholz

Reviews:

Good Stuff!

I agree with a previous review that said The River contains some of the best and worst Springsteen songs released. For the most part, this album has some solid songs.

The Best (IMO):

1. Hungry Heart

2. Point Blank

3. Fade Away

4. The River

5. The Ties that Bind

6. Out in the Street

The Worst (IMO):

1. Crush on You

2. Sherry Darling

3. I Wanna Marry You

4. I'm a Rocker

Despite the filler songs on this album, I'd still recommend The River.

Masterful Release. Remaster Please.

This is a monumental album for Bruce Springsteen. It's his White Album, his Exile on Main Street. Sure, there are those who say it could have used a bit of editing, but I'm glad he went over the top for this one.

One caveat though: This CD is in desperate need of remastering. Hello? Anyone out there? REMASTER THE RIVER and earn your fifth star!

Sign 'O' The Times!

Prince is a creep.

Except that Sign 'O' The Times is his best.... NOT PURPLE RAIN!!

....although not far off.

Well, even after been being a Springsteen convert with various albums like Born To Run and Born In The U.S.A..... what is with this guy? Being born is gross. Ok, that was dumb. But anyway, it took a while for me to really like The River. It may be his best though! I never thought I'd be saying that. It's not though, but it's close. The River ends one of the greatest trilogy's in rock & roll!!! Oh yeah!!

And then Kramer says: "it's Fusilli-Jerry!"

Oh man.

I quit.

I'm gonna have like 0 out of 20 people saying this review was helpful.
