better with age
Its amazing to me all of these people throwing out their Springsteen because of the current political issue. GROW UP!!
Why do I include this here? Because when this album first came out I was among the many fans extremely dissapointed over the disbanding of E Street. Now, ten years plus later I know that this was a necessary growth step for Springsteen and that these songs were better than I was able to give them credit for at the time. As time goes by we learn and opinions change. If you disagree with what Mr. Springsteen is suggesting than vote for Bush. Its that simple isn't it? Don't throw out a fine collection of music like this or Essential or The Rising whatever else you might have DUMMY!!. As for the album itself while I do still agree the production is a little on the glossy side songs like Human Touch, Cross My Heart, I Wish I Were Blind and Soul Driver have stood up as true gems in the Springsteen cannon. Also worth a listen is the live "Plugged" versions as they are done in a more raw and immediate style that better shows their strengths. Who knows, you conservatives may find in ten years, as I did, that Bruce ("A man brings his country to war over false pretense he loses his job, its not rocket science") was right.
Yes, It's Underrated
This is not Springsteen's best album, but like several previous reviewers I think it is one of his most underrated. Some Springsteen purists resented the fact that he used L.A. studio musicians rather than the E Street Band to make this album. The resulting sound is slightly more polished and commercial than his earlier albums, but doesn't undermine the essential raw emotion and energy of Springsteen's music.
Human Touch is a collection of mainly hard-rocking songs about the difficulty of life and love, and fears of inadequacy in the face of those difficulties. There are several songs of great depth here, including "I Wish I Were Blind" (one of Springsteen's best ever, in my opinion), "Human Touch", "Cross My Heart", "With Every Wish", and "Man's Job." I also like the blue-eyed soul funkiness (unusual for Springsteen) of "Soul Driver." True, there are also a few stinkers among the songs, but overall I think this is a good album and deserving of more credit than it has gotten.
YO BOSS! UP OFF YOUR BUTT & GET BUSY REMASTERING!
Hey, BRRRRRUUUUUCCCE!
What's the deal? Just about every major Top 40 artist has had their catalogs sonically updated EXCEPT YOURS.
Why can we buy the "Tracks" editions, and get glorious HDCD-encoded sound, but "Touch" sounds like it's coming out an AM radio?
OK, you did your best, but Dubya's back in the White House for the next four years, and Kerry's home in his underwear watching the Weather Channel. You should have plenty of time on your hands now... GET BUSY!
Let's see some remastering!
