Description: Normally, an artist such as Bjork with a mass audience across the globe steadily eases off as the back-catalog starts to grow. However, Medulla, the fifth proper studio album from Bjork is without a doubt the most challenging collection of music she has ever released.

For the most part, the album is made up of layers upon layers of processed vocal parts arranged in either harmony or dissonance such as "Vokuro" and "Oll Birtan," respectively. Some, such as "Show Me Forgiveness" are simple acapella, the aforementioned sounding like a vocal cut from Debut minus the music. Another echo of Bjork days gone by is "Desired Constellation," a slow trancy pulse underpinning her distinct vocals. "Where Is the Line," "Who Is It," and "Triumph of a Heart" are a bit grimier with a semi-urban twist, the latter a fantastically funky beatbox number with an outstanding introduction, the closest moment to a pop song appearing on Medulla.

Although traditional instruments and breaks have been removed from this album, Medulla is no great departure for Bjork but in a sense it is radically different from any of her previous work. Some will love it, some hate it, and some just won't be sure what to think. --David Trueman

Reviews:

ear candy

This album left me completely breathless.Once more I can tell Björk is a truly wonderful artist. Each song is a pleasure to hear, it just makes you anxious to hear the next one. I strongly recommend it.

let's see...

I really don't know what the purpose of writing a review is when there are already hundreds of reviews posted already. As if this one little review is going to make some huge impact on some reader's opinion. As if he can't click on the sound clips and judge the album for himself. What these reviews offer is simply a way in which we vent our individual feelings, positive or negative. Oh well, let's vent!

Well, let me tell you, before I even reached the second half of the album, my feelings were SUPER MEGA POSITIVE! Wow! What is this thing that Björk made? This has got to be the best album I've heard in quite some time. And I very much disagree with the reviewers who think that albeit there can be no doubt that this is Björk at her most creative/artistic/weird, the songs somehow don't move a listener emotionally. What a load of crap! I'm not even through the second listening (i just bought the album) and I'm totally exhilirated, and was touched by every single song. The fact that almost every instrument is of human origin provides an interesting feelings of intimacy and honesty. The sound is..well, what can I say, very human. And therefore very direct, so no way the songs will leave you feeling indifferent. At least, to my opinion. Now, if you're one of those people who just can't in any way get their brain to leave the matrix of learnt experiences in which a voice is a live human thing and an instrument is a not-a-live thing, then I'm sorry for you, and I'm sure Björk is sorry too. How can a lot of you say that you like weird music, and weirdness, when you're not prepared to let go of your expectations? Or do you put some limits to your weirdness? Besides, the songs here are not so thoroughly weird, at least as far as the melody and harmony go. It's not like she's using some exotic Eastern scales. Exotic vocal arrangements, yes, sure, but the flow of music is very beautiful, at least as far as the ears of the Western culture listeners are concerned. So, a lot of nice melody here, some of which is (agin, not a weird) continuation of the previous albums. Yes, there are very unusual vocal exhibitions on "ancestors", but with a tranquil piano background. This song is the weirdest moment on the album, being simultaneously strange, funny and frightening. But don't tell me you're dissapointed that it doesn't well fit your idea of the top 40 pop song. That's obviously not what Björk intended there. I think you need to participate a little with Björk when you listen to this, so either participate and see where that takes you, or don't complain about not being properly entertained.

The Medúlla deserves 5 stars, even 6, but I gave it 4, just so those who are combing through the reviews, sniffing for the negative bits can now be properly dissapointed,,,ha ha, I'm being mean.

There is absolutely not a thing lacking on this album, it's just that great.

Medulla's Triumph

This album shows how much Bjork has advanced since her Debut days. Each track has its fragile complexity that makes it beautiful. From the heartfelt first track to the last hip-hop flavored last track this album is a great listen for anyone who really appriciates talent.
