Description: With her breakthrough 2002 debut,
Let Go, Avril Lavigne tried to market herself as the bona fide alternative to tarty teen queens, Britney and Christina. Her guitar-pop hits were irresistibly bratty but the whole "Complicated" teen pose was a little hard to swallow, especially since two songwriters called the Matrix--who had at least twenty years on the Canadian singer--fed her most of the material. Having had the chance to live a little, Lavigne returns to make good on her angsty image with
Under My Skin, an album rippling with delightfully dour melodies and heartfelt lyrics about loneliness ("How Does It Feel") and fractured relationships ("Don't Tell Me"). Is it clichéd? Sure. Will it scare off her necktie and t-shirt wearing fans? Possibly. But there's nothing quite as satisfying as watching a teen-pop icon actually reveal her soul. --

Reviews:
Avril is changing.
This CD was really good. The songs are all good and if you liked her last album, youll probably like this one too.
The best songs are Dont Tell me,My Happy Ending,He Wasnt,Take Me Away,Forgotten, and Nobodys Home. All the songs are good I just thinkl those are the best. Shes the Alanis Morissette of her generation. You should get this CD if you like Alanis or Avril.
Dark and melodic but lacking...
Avril may not be the most wonderful person, but she's definatly got some raw musical talent. In "Under My Skin", Avril explores a more tough and tender side of her...which of course ends up being just as spunky as she is.
The track "Together" has a very pretty melody and some great lyrics to accompany it. It's driving and painful, which draws the listener in. "Fall To Pieces" is a good example of subtle tone quality which gives Avril her trademark cynical vibe she displayed in "Let Go". It's a straightforward song but it reaches deep down.
The only problem with this album is that it's just a little too dark. None of the songs truly relift the listener up from the dark, so it all feels very same-sounding. Most of the songs in one way or another are about relationships and how they all suck.
So all in all, it's a nice CD for when you're depressed or if you like punky pop-rock....but it could have been better.
So help me If I hear another Avril song
The problem I have with this singer is the job I work at plays the songs: "Sk8r Boi", "Im with you", "Complicated", "Happy Ending" and "Nobody's Home" 50 BILLION times a day. I know the all the words, rhyme schemes, and rhythm patterns like the back of my hand. She might be alright if I didnt have to listen to her songs over and over and over and over and over and OVER again until I get so pissed off that I slam a keyboard into the speaker then head-butt the stereo system while stomping her crappy albums into the ground. Now THAT sounds like a Happy Ending to me!
