Description: Air's debut,
Moon Safari, solidified the French duo's position among fickle electronica music fans and earned them critical accolades throughout the press. Yet one of their most important fans turned out to be Sofia Coppola (daughter of Francis Ford), who, inspired by their moody ambiance, asked them to write the soundtrack for her directorial debut.
The Virgin Suicides--adapted from the novel by Jeffrey Eugenides about the Lisbon sisters and their quest for answers in a turbulent American adolescence--includes stars such as Kirsten Dunst and Kathleen Turner, and Air make a deeply impressionistic subliminal appearance as well. Gordon Tracks sings the lush and romantic "Playground Love"; the rest is a throbbing score of somber synths and thick washes of modest psychedelic touches that recall the tranquil buzz that comes from too much staring at the lava lamp. The only complaint is that this 13-track album is only 40 minutes long; some of the cuts should have been longer. The meditative quality practically demands it.

Reviews:
Out Of Context
This is amazing, beautiful, highly creative music . . . set against an amazing, beautiful, highly creative movie. But played alone, separate and apart from the film, the music lands somewhere between boring and ridiculous.
I play this about twice a year. And I am a huge Air fan, if that tells you anything. Probably a 2.5 star at best, but I'll round up since it's Air.
The Darkest side of AIR
This original score from the Virgin's Suicide from Sofia Coppola is nicely worked by the hand of AIR, one of my favorites electronic bands out there.
In this cd the music is very dark and also it gets very very downtempo, it gives the chills in certain tracks, and you have to watch the movie so you can get the whole feeling of the music, full of mistery, sensuality and charm.
For some people this cd may be very boring but as I say you got to get the feeling of the movie and then mixing it.
As usual AIR plays excellent electro-acoustic downtempo, a must have for any AIR fan, I'm one of them! but don't expect the likes of Moon Safari or Premiere Symptomes or any of their albums because it's not their usual sound! so you are warned by now.
Underappreciated Masterpiece
I never used to like The Virgin Suicides. I'm a huge Air fan, but I used to stick to Moon Safari and sometimes Talkie Walkie. I listened to the whole thing a few days ago for the first time and I was blown away. This album grows on you, to the point that you just can't stop listening to it. I've been listening to it for about three or four days straight and I still can't get enough. Just give this album some patience and you'll soon grow to love it.
