Description: They'd soon crash, and hard, thanks to their own excesses. But Rocks captures Aerosmith at a crazily driven peak of creativity; anyone who heard it and continued to dismiss them as mere Stones clones was just being willful. This is blues rock cranked up to '70s stadium level, the sound of the Trans Am, or maybe the Porsches several of these guys (surprisingly) remember driving. The psychic battering they would succumb to on the next year's Draw the Line is foreshadowed in Joe Perry's "Combination," but he and Steven Tyler also celebrate the rock-star mythos on "Lick and a Promise." The party-fueled tension, the tension-fueled party. --Rickey Wright

Reviews:

Aerosmith at their all time high

Rocks (1976.) Aerosmith's fourth album.

Early on, Aerosmith got gradually better with every album they had released. Their self-titled first album was not great, but it did show the band's potential. The sophomore effort Get Your Wings showed a massive improvement, and the band peaked with its third album, Toys In The Attic. With its massive hits and underrated masterpiece, Toys was going to be a hard album for the group to follow up. What came out the following year was the band's fourth album, Rocks. Read on for my review of this album.

I consider Toys In The Attic to be Aerosmith's best overall album, but I consider Rocks to be a very close second. Toys was not an easy album to follow up, and I find it hard to believe that the band was able to release two back-to-back five-star efforts like this. It's hard to believe, but true. Two huge hits came from the album, the classic hard rocker Back In The Saddle (which needs no introduction), and the equally excellent and notable Last Child. But much like the albums that came before, the hits are not necessarily the best tracks this album has to offer. For example, Rats In The Cellar is one of the best tracks the band has ever recorded. With this track, the band goes for an early heavy metal-inspired sound, and succeeds beautifully. Throughout the entire album, the band serves up a series of excellent tracks, all of which manage to have their own sense of diversity. Aerosmith albums don't get much better than this one.

The Aerosmith catalogue was remastered and rereleased on CD, but sadly, the remaster series is a pretty bland one - no bonus tracks or expanded liner notes whatsoever are included. Likewise, the record company chose not to do twofer releases, despite the fact that it would have worked really well. Still, these issues don't alter my actual feelings about the album.

Rocks, well, rocks. This is Aerosmith at an all-time high. A high documented only on this album and its predecessor. This album was great, but it was only the beginning for the band. Would the efforts that followed be even better, or would the band enter a downward spiral? If you want to find out, buy the albums or keep reading my reviews. Final verdict? Rocks rocks. Buy it without hesitation. Five stars.

i hate this song

I've just heard this song on the radio and it's BACK IN THE SADDLE and it's mean, yellin, screaming and ugly! This album has

lots of sex drugs, violence, and liquor. Worse than Toys in the

Attic. The only good band is Dire Straits! Every band sucks!

This album sucks!

Dont buy it at anytime

or I'll kill you.

Perhaps the Greatest

I always wanted to get into Aerosmith. I was, of course, a fan of what I like to call their big three: "Dream On", "Sweet Emotion", and "Walk This Way". After hearing those, I decided to check out their CDs and listened to some of "Just Push Play". It had 3 or 4 good songs, but of course that was modern Aerosmith. I looked back at their 70s heyday and "Toys In The Attic" and "Rocks" stood out. Even though "Toys" has two of the big three on it, the rest of the songs are only good - not great. Then I listening to merely the 30-sec samples of the songs on "Rocks" and instantly knew this was the Aerosmith CD to purchase.

Every single song; all nine tracks, are gold. Every song is unique sounding. While my palette of Aerosmith isn't too large, I must say that this CD is absolute entertainment. It just might be my favourite album ever, and I enjoy listening to it as much as "Sgt. Pepper" by you know who. I have yet to find a CD with this much consistent good listening. If you like 70s Aerosmith style of rock, this is truly a great buy.

well it rocks but not enough

At the Tower Records in Fresno, Bob bought me this item and the

reason I need it is because many people consider this is one of

the best albums ever! And when I got it, I've listened to it and

the songs are good but totally the best one is Back in the Saddle. Back in the Saddle is another track that I could listen

to over N' over again! The "I'M BAAAAAAAAAACK!!" chant is actully

really cool. Great followup if you like On the Night, Nevermind,

Appetite for Destruction, Back in Black, and Use Your Illusion I.

If you like Aerosmith, then you will mostly need this CD.

Last Child is a very annoying song at the end.
