Description: While Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap sounds like every other AC/DC album, it is distinguished by a lyrical puerility spectacular even by Bon Scott's standards. Two tracks--"Love at First Feel" and "Squealer"--are ruminations on the morality of sex with schoolgirls. "Big Balls," ostensibly a narrative from the perspective of an aristocrat socialite, is actually a somewhat labored excuse for the band to chant "We've got big balls." This juvenile posturing was, to a large degree, AC/DC winding up their burgeoning foreign audience by playing to stereotypical expectations of Australians. On Dirty Deeds, however, AC/DC try too hard. Only on "Ain't No Fun (Waiting Round to Be a Millionaire)" is Scott's laconic wit deployed to real effect: the sheer glee in the line "Get your fuckin' jumbo jet off my airport!" is almost worth the album's purchase price. --Andrew Mueller

Reviews:

Another Bon era AC/DC gem

AC/DC's album Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap was released on Atlantic outside America, Canada and Japan in 1976 but was released in the US, Canada and Japan in March of 1981.

The US version of Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap was rejected by Atlantic for some reason I cannot comprehend. However, they were forced to change their stance after Bon Scott passed away and issued it in the US.

Dirty Deeds was the third AC/DC album I heard in my life(after Back in Black and Highway to Hell when my older brother got this 8 track(yes 8 track) and then I would get on cassette eventually and now remastered CD).

We begin with the classic title track. This rocker combined a killer Angus and Malcolm Young riff with a classic Bon Scott vocal and deservedly became a rock radio staple and hit the Top 10 on Billboard's Mainstream Rock chart in 1981. The rocker Love at First Feel follows and is a great rocker which chugs along nicely. Next is the humorous Big Balls which is a great rocker. If you don't like the song then you must not have a sense of humor. Next is Rocker which was actually on the band's 1975 Australian album T.N.T. and was first heard by US audiences on the live 1978 album If You Want Blood You've Got It. We end the first half with the classic AC/DC rocker Problem Child which rocks. In fact, the ending on this track is longer than the version on 1977's Let There Be Rock.

We kick off the second half with the blues rock of There's Gonna Be Some Rockin' which is a great song. Next is the six minute plus rocker Ain't No Fun(Waiting 'Round to Be a Millionaire) which starts as a mid-tempo rocker before switching gears for the last three or so minutes where it speeds up. Next is the ballad Ride On which is a great song and would gain new life in the Stephen King film Maximum Overdrive. We end the album with the great rocker Squealer which had a superb ending Angus Young solo.

Dirty Deeds when finally released in the US shot straight to #3 and sold over six million copies in the US alone which was great from a "so-called" from the vault album and is a must have in one's AC/DC collection!

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

4.5 stars - An ACDC classic

Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap (American Version) (Recorded 1976, Released 1981.) ACDC's second recorded worldwide release.

ACDC came onto the rock and roll scene in their native Australia with their first two albums, T.N.T. and High Voltage. Interestingly enough, the band would release very different albums in other parts of the world. The High Voltage that got a worldwide release is NOT the same album that was released in Australia. What was to be the band's second worldwide release, Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap, was recorded in 1976 but didn't see the light of day in America until 1981 - roughly a year after the death of Bon Scott! Read on for my review of the American version of Dirty Deeds.

I thought that High Voltage (the American album) was a solid release in all aspects, but I feel that this, the group's second worldwide release, is a better album in just about every aspect. The songwriting and overall performance on the album have improved drastically, which says a lot, since they were pretty good on the previous album. The title track and Problem Child went onto become ACDC classics, and appropriately so - they rock! Perhaps the song on the album that gets the most mixed reviews is Big Balls. The song's questionable lyrics and comical feel cause many fans to shun the song. Those people are morons - the song rules! It's NOT intended to be taken seriously, and most people take the lyrics the wrong way - it's about high society. Love At First Feel, a rocker reminiscent of Queen's Tie Your Mother Down, is probably my favorite track on the album. Some of the most interesting things offered here are the neo-rockabilly tracks like Rocker. You wouldn't expect ACDC to do that kind of song well - and they prove you wrong! The album does seem a bit repetitive in places (a common flaw of most releases in the band's catalogue), but ultimately it's a satisfing release.

The ACDC catalogue has been reissued several times over the years, but the reissues aren't a whole lot different from earlier releases of the albums. The Australian albums have never been released in America, which is a shame, since those were the way the band originally intended the albums to be heard. If you're a die-hard, import the Australian ones. Otherwise, the domestic ones work fine.

Dirty Deeds is a great ACDC album, and it's shocking that it wasn't released in America until five years after it was recorded! Still, it's damn good hard rock. If you're a fan of the band, this is one of the albums you've just gotta add to your collection.

There's Gonna Be Some Rockin'!!!

"Back in Black", "For Those About to Rock" and "Highway to Hell" seem to get the most ink whenever any writes about, or talks about AC/DC, but I think "Dirty Deeds" is one of AC/DC's best albums. Sure you get the classic title track that is still played in concert today, but you also get "Ride On" which is just a great blusey ballad, about the only ballad I can think of that AC/DC has recorded. "Squealer" is just a great rock tune, and the pulsing bass-line that runs through the song will keep your foot tapping. Just try not chuckling at "Big Balls", and try not playing air guitar to "Problem Child" or "There's Gonna Be Some Rockin'". There isn't a weak track on the album, every tune is solid Bon Scott is in top form, and Angus Young's guitar work is top notch. Just one listen to this cd will show you why AC/DC has been around for over 3 decades.

Dirty deeds done dirt cheap

It's a great album.

It's a very intresting cd, because it has different styles of rock. In adition it has ovbiously the classic "dirty" and powerful sound of AC/DC. I recommend it.

Good luck
