ANOTHER compilation?

What is the reasoning driving these endless reissues? Surely the record company would maximise profits by promoting the recently released - and far superior - Definitive Collection. On & On is a seemingly random collection of songs from ABBA's 10-year recording history, and as such is an odd listening experience: imagine a 12 track compilation of Beatles songs from their entire history and you'll appreciate how stylistically lumpy the result. Just fork out the extra for the Definitive Collection and get a great encapsulation of ABBA's fabulosity.

On and On These Useless Compilations Arrive...

ON AND ON perhaps serves as an appropriate title for this mixed bag of an ABBA collection, as it apparently showcases Universal Records' desire to issue ABBA compilations in any way possible. Even if it means the songs have to be practically picked randomly from the group's entire catalog. It would have been one thing if the 12 tracks in ON AND ON were all big numbers, but here, there are only two big hits- "Waterloo" and "The Name of the Game." "Love Isn't Easy (But It Sure Is Hard Enough)"; "On and on and On"; "Lay All Your Love on Me"; "The Visitors"; and "When All Is Said and Done" may have been hits as well, yet they were all relatively small hits. The other five songs here are album tracks randomly picked from ABBA's catalog, and none of them really rank among the group's best non-singles.

So, ON AND ON is pretty much an absolute waste of time for every ABBA fan; the diehards probably own all of these songs already on other albums, and if the curious wanted a budget-line collection on ABBA, they would most likely choose the group's volume in THE MILLENNIUM COLLECTION, which actually includes the best-of-the-best (but hopefully, they would just shell out a few extra dollars for the superb ABBA GOLD instead).
